Kasparov vs. Computer Showdown! |

It has been a long wait for Garry Kasparov - five years and eight months, to be exact. But now the world's number one chess player has the chance to get his own back after he stunned the world of chess by losing to a computer in 1997.
In a six-game contest that began on Sunday night in New York, Mr Kasparov, officially the highest rated player in the 1,500-year history of the game, takes on Deep Junior, an Israeli-designed program and world computer chess champion.
With at least a day's rest between games, each of which may last up to seven hours, it will be another six days at the earliest before a winner emerges. Many believe the result will hang on the last game, which is scheduled for February 7.
The contest is billed as the ultimate showdown between man and machine. "[The match] is very important for the game of chess and the human race as a whole," Mr Kasparov said. He added that he hoped "to prove human players are not hopeless".

I'm forming a permanent DigiPen squad/clan for the New Conglomerite. So far we've got a medic (me), a transporter/hacker, an engineer, a weapons specialist, and a covert ops/hacker. If we can't find any more support internally, we're thinking of taking DetNet applications for honerary [dP]s. Email me if you're interested.

Has anyone else started to form your clans? See ya on the battle field.

LA City May Impose Restrictions On Cyber Cafes!
L.A. councilman urges security measures at the venues after two teens are hurt in the Valley.
By Richard Fausset and Karima Haynes, Times Staff Writers
As police searched for suspects in a melee and gunfight that left two teenagers injured outside an Internet cafe in Northridge, Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine on Tuesday called for new regulations on coffee shops specializing in realistic and often violent online video games.
According to police, one teenage boy was shot in the leg and another was hit over the head with a chair during a fight with six other boys outside the NetStreet Internet Cafe about 8 p.m. Monday. The cafe had been hosting a $300 prize tournament for "Counter-Strike," a computer shoot-'em-up game.
Police said the argument had nothing to do with the tournament. But Zine said it was time for the city to prevent the real-world violence that some of the so-called cyber cafes have been attracting.
