BERLIN, Germany -- A previously unknown Iraqi opposition group has taken a number of hostages at the Iraqi embassy in Berlin including the ambassador, police say.

Two people have been slightly hurt during the siege involving around 10 hostage-takers who stormed the building in a leafy suburb of the German capital.

The opposition group had said its action was "peaceful and temporary" and had occupied the building as a first step to ousting Saddam Hussein.

CNN's Berlin Bureau Chief Stephanie Halasz says local residents reported hearing seven gunshots. Police said the injured were not the victims of gunfire.

Halasz said German special forces, who had joined a large number of police surrounding the building, appeared to be readying guns and donning masks in preparation for possible action.

A new group calling itself the Democratic Iraqi Opposition of Germany had issued a statement in German saying it was launching a "peaceful and temporary" action to press its demands for an end to Saddam's rule
