RESEARCHERS believe they have got to the bottom of skin cancers.

Studies at Adelaide's Flinders Medical Centre have found skin cells in the buttocks can determine a person's risk of developing melanoma, which is the deadliest of skin cancers.

The centre studied 46 people with melanoma and 68 people with no history of any skin cancer and found those with melanoma had a significantly increased number of mast cells in their buttocks.

These large cells in the skin suppress the immune system on direct contact with sunlight. Principal researcher Prue Hart said the study had focused on people's bottoms because it was an area not commonly exposed to the sun or other environmental factors. "In some instances, skin cancers just get removed and destroyed by the immune system," Associate Professor Hart said.
