(reading the bit about how that people have 2000 volts in the electric chair and the whole woo 4000 volts thats high thing) what pisses me off about this is that all electrical terminals show the warning sign in voltages like the other day i was at the pub and saw the ciruit breaker box with caution:400 volts. how long will it take for people to realise that its the current not the voiltage that kils you. i'm sure most of you had those static machines in science that made your hair stand up and gave you an electriv shock well that shocks about 50,000 volts. it takes a lot of voltage to kill you but only about 0.8mA to stop your heart. anywayz the post was funny

I think it is partially for shock value (er...) if you were an average joe and knew nothing about electricity which box would you be more likely to open: the one that says CAUTION 50,000 VOLTS! Or the one that says CAUTION 0.8mA!

Well, part of it is that the amperage isn't something you want to bother calculating. If you're pumping 4000 volts to a streetlight... actually, a lot of street lights, you have to be able to handle the load of a bunch of florescant lights powering up at once. The amount of amperage that the line can provide varies, based on if the other lights are on, which wires you're touching, how much of your body you've got as the Load, etc. The line will always have 4000 volts (roughly), but the current can't be nailed down as easily.

As for taking 50,000 volts... if the power supply can only handle 1 Watt, then 50,000 volts isn't that big a deal. For the most part, with electricity, you put a voltage on a line, have components that can produce a given wattage, and let the load draw whatever current it needs based on its resistance.
