You know, I like lots of different types of music. Among my likes are, believe it or not, selected Disney soundtracks. Ultimately, I blame them for this despicable trend that started with the "Lion King" soundtrack...
Why do some people feel compelled to give us the same song more than once in an album? Case in point: Alanis Morrissette, "Jagged Little Pill". I can almost forgive her because of artistic content, but I can't, really. Case in point: Josh Joplin Group, "Useful Music." I don't really want to listen to the suicide song once, much less twice. The worst offender I've seen so far, however, has been Disney's "Tarzan" soundtrack--for some unknown reason, they let several songs get doubled, and one song get on there three times!! There is simply no reason for this.
Quick poll: Who else that you know of does this to their albums? Do you actually like it, and if so, WHY??

You could argue that having tracks on the cd more than once is insurance for if the CD gets scratched in one place..

wait wait wait... they actually have the SAME song on the SAME CD? I don't think I've seen this before. Are you sure it isn't a remix or different version or something?
Name the songs to demonstrate your point please, then the CDDB will decide.

They are remixes, but my point still stands. For example:
- Josh Joplin Group, "Useful Music". Tracks 6 and 13 are both "I've Changed", and believe me, not enough has changed to warrant another track.
- Alanis Morissette, "Jagged Little Pill". Tracks 2 and 13 are both "You Oughta Know", but 13 has an extra (I'll admit, moving) bit at the end. I can almost forgive this one. Almost.
- Disney Soundtrack, "The Lion King". The last three songs are the Elton John versions of the songs, with slightly different lyrics but the same tune. All three suck.
- Disney Soundtrack, "Tarzan". The "Two Worlds" song shows up, in various incarnations, four times: Tracks 1, 6, 9, and 14. While they are all a little different, they just aren't different enough to warrant four appearences. In addition, two other songs show up twice; once as the movie version, and once as a studio remix.
Again I ask, why? Why can we not get just ONE version of the song, and if we like all versions, go and get the single (which will invariably have at least three versions of the song on it)?? If I have to shell out $15 - $18 for a CD, then I want to pay for 12 songs, and NOT the same song over and over again!

because the artists get paid by the track and repeating a track means little or no effort expended for money?

On some of the more recent soundtracks I've bought they've got techno remixes of the main title track (apparently Mr. Oakenfold is running out of things to do). I don't really mind since, basically, it's an entirely new song.

For the Tarzan soundtrack, the answer is easy, they use the same score many times in the movie, but interpreted differently to represent different feelings in the movie.
Anw, i don't care, most of the time i have my mp3's, mp3 broadcasts (di.fm trance radio rocks!), and some Blank & Jones and Paul Van Dyk mixes.

I got a few cd's with stuff like that. I, personally, hate it more when an artists puts the same song on 3 different CD's. I have 5 CD's that have the same song. Now, I can't remember which cd's, or what the song is, but I remember there's 5 and they all have the same song.
It's also like when you buy the soundtrack for a couple movies, and there's one song that's on all of them. I can't really be mad about that, because it's not like the CD's made by the same people.
So yeah... FFFFFFUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKK THE RIAA!!

Soon CDs will be replaced with digital media.
we will end up paying more per song, but not buying the filler crap that no-talent one hit wonder bands pump out.
note: this will turn out to be a very bad thing in the case of bands who acutally have talent, and don't fill CDs with 1 good song and 12 lame pop sellout whore tracks.
Fuck it all anyway. Im still pissed that MTV played PearlJam's 'do the evolution' video (the best video EVER imho) twice then forgot about it.
