i posted awhile back explaining how i got kicked out of college after 2 years of terrible grades. since then i havent signed up for community classes nor have i moved out and found a place to live other then my parents house. im asking for advice on what i should try to study. i havent finished the General Foundation Requirments (GRF's) so i still need to take alot of classes to make up for that and then can work my way into getting a B.S. degree in information technology or information systems (comp sci is too hard) i know i can also take classes and get Microsoft Certified or maybe some other types of Certification training classes. i have alot of work to make up to get a B.S. degree but im thinking about taking certification classes, any advice on which ones to take or what kid of job market or internships i can look for after i finish? i know adding B.S. degree will help out my resume but im not even close to getting it.
it kinda sucks looking at all the away messages on my AIM from all my friends i made at school how they are happy to be back and are having fun, while im sitting here alone waiting till 5 so i can goto work and bus tables at a resturant all night. i think i have a few days left to try and get into a community college (i had two choices to goto but one started today already) i was hopeing to have my own place or atleast signed the lease for one by now, but have had nothing but trouble finding a decent apartment, and the fact my friend hasnt been looking to hard doesnt help and also doesnt have any money saved up like i do makes it harder to find a place we can afford. i doubt ill be a full time student right now if i do decide to take any classes they will probably just be like 2 clases that will help finish the GFR's and then next spring semester i will enroll full time and hopefully by then ill have my own place. im also still single but am hopeing to get into a relationship, ive gone on one date with this girl at work the other night and plan to go out again when we both have the time, she is real nice even though she isnt the girl who i really have true feelings for (fact: the girl i REALLY like also works there and i have known her since last school year, so its kinda weird if i start dating this other girl)
so by spring semester i hope to be a full time student, still have my job, and an apartment with my friend, and a nice relationship with a girlfriend..
now you know all about me
wish me luck..

You want to talk to Jim about that if you see him around, AFAIK he taught himself a shitload from the ground up, got himself certified, and now earns mucho moolah.

Ok... Jim's life history coming up... I have some similarities with you, but I have this feeling you aren't going to be willing to take the steps that I took. But maybe you can take what I've learned and apply it to a unique solution for yourself.

The year is 1992. I'm just starting my Senior year. Senior year wasn't as much fun for me, as it was for most people. I fucked off so much in my earlier years, that I had to take a full boat in order to graduate. Yet still my friends somehow managed to get me to skip school, time and time again. Ultimately making me have to finish high school in SUMMER school. I didn't get to graduate with my class. Regardless of what some of the people around here will tell you, I've VERY intelligent, and have never had a problem with Math, or English or anything. The reason I skipped so much school and NEVER did even ONE homework assignment since the eighth grade is because school bored me. I already knew most of the stuff from sitting through the few classes I decided to show up to. Doing the work to prove it seemed pointless. Unless it was a test, then I'd ace it just to piss off the teachers.

So now that I'm out of high school. Now what? I didn't have the grades OR desire to go to college. 4 years of sitting around working, and not only NOT getting paid for it. I'd have to PAY THEM for it. Not my cup of tea. Of course now I can't get a job.

So I joined the Marine Corps. Don't stop reading now!!! Let me tell you. If you are under 27 years old, it's by far the best thing to do and it's not bad either. It's a little tough at first, but after the first year, it's a breeze. You can't ask for better benefits from a job.
Free room and board
Free education in the field of your choice
Free money to seek OUTSIDE education in the field of your choice.
Free medical, dental, and 200k in life insurance.
Support fields like MIS will never see combat unless we go to WWIII
Shoot machine guns!
Respect
Pride
It's all there. And after 4 years when you get out. You will disciplined, military looks great on a resume, you can then go to college for next to nothing...

After I got out of a very successful career in the Military I moved back home with mom and dad to try and find a job. After about 1 month of searching and working for my dad as an electrician, I found a job as a PC tech making 15.32 (32k annual) an hour. 3 months later I was promoted to Network Admin making 19.72 (41k annual) an hour and they paid for me to get my MCSE. I quit that job and took my first salaried position as a Network Admin for 45k a year. Worked there for about a year and left making 50k a year. Took all the knowledge I learned there and went to work for Sabre for 72k a year. Worked there for a year till they for bought out by EDS and currently I make over 80k a year.

All because I joined the military. Seriously. That's what it all boils down to. The MCSE helps a lot, but when the person you are talking to see Military experience, 90\% of the people where either in the military, or have family or friends from the military. If you look sharp, smile, and are friendly...... you are in.

The guy that hired me for the PC Tech job = Ex-Air force

The girl that hired me for the Net Admin job = Army daughter

The guy that hired me at Sabre = Ex-Navy

For someone who doesn't feel they are going anyway, the military can set you down the right path. It can change your life for the better.

I don't normally troll these forums anymore, but if you have any questions about the Military, MCSE, if you want me to spice up your resume, need advice on where to look for a job, how to get your foot in the door. Anything. I'm pretty sure I can help. Email me at jim@brewsandcues.com

its kind of a mini dream of mine to be in the armed police force. not the army cos its just to ex-civilian. hell i know you might have to have had some army experience to join but i can dream (no its not some CS fantasy i always thought it pretty cool). to be perfectly honest i have no internal conflict with killing people. my life turnign out the way it has means i'm pretty much psychopathic when it comes to viewing human life. just everything that planet earth offers is just too boring i want to be able to have a life that isnt all cosy and soft or be stuck in a desk job and not be able to view the real world as it is. and of course the guns...the guns help too

i just seem to have this fascination with death and destruction. everytime theres some sort of documentary on the end of the world or a killer virus i get a psycological hard on for it

anywayz i have no idea how to go about it.so i guess the story ends there

This is pretty amusing, the way I have done in high school right now is the way that jim did in high school as he explains it.

Of course I'm about to enter grade 10 and I can't afford to mess around this year.. or is that what he said when he was in grade 10?

Im with Jim on this one.

I to fucked around in HS. After that i bounced from job to job.

at 24 i joined the Army. With its help i was able to pull my head out of my ass. I got a degree in electronics, im a NT network admin making 55k a year and am going for my MCSE that will get me more money when i leave this place.

Guys, you got 2 choices. Pull your heads our of your ass when your in HS. Collages look at your last 2 years. Even if you were a fuck up the first 2 years of HS there is still time to change.

If your under 27 and you think its to late join a branch of the military or the air force. (sorry, im a ground pounder and the air force is not the military) This will give you what you need personaly to help you get what you need to get a job in the real world.

I did my stint too.
In So. Africa 1989, I was drafted into the airforce (they had it back then)
Saw that I could fuck around for two years refueling trucks or get some use out of it so I went for the PTI (Phys Training Instructor) course. Cause the Air force there is so small, you don't just teach PT, you teach drill, mil law, weapons (yes you master about 40 of them) and a bunch of other shit, unlike the Army there, where you just teach one of them.
Generally, anything military is 'hurry up and wait' and a lot of time was wasted, but the best things I learnt were things about myself. Particularly what my limits were. I never would have imagined being able to do what I did. I saw some guys literally piss blood. It's not just a saying.

Essentially, PTI's in So. Africa were considered rock hard cunts. You just don't feel pain anymore. EVERYONE gave em a wide berth. The course was 9 months. You finish off with 3 runs in full kit (circa 1950 canvas webbing): 3km in 15 minutes; 15km in 100 minutes and 45km in 7 hrs.

I never would have imagined doing it, but after the course you see how much the human body can do and what damage it can take. It's awesome.

Ah...your one of those guys.

the ones they tell seals about at bedtime to make sure they have nightmares.

The ones they tell marines about to make them wet the bed.

The ones they just told us to stay the fuck away from.

I heard about you guys. None of it good if you were on the wrong end of it.
