I just read an article on The Register:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/55/20779.html

This is why I love their site. They don't just take the words of "experts", they actually think about them to see if they make any sense.

How can the Code Red virus cause >ũbillion in damage? I really would like to hear a real explanation for this one. I haven't read exactly what it does, only that is targets computers running IIS, which they should classify as a Trojen Horse in the first place. But how can patching a system cost a company money? Here's the breakdown as I see it:

IT person downloads patch: Ũ since they are paying for the bandwidth already. And it's from a MS distribution site, so they never toped 10kps.

IT person double clicks patch: Ũ. Oh the horror of doing work.

Computer says please reboot: Ũ~Ũ.01 Ok, maybe someone, somewhere lost a little money on this since they couldn't have their shopping cart system running for 5 minutes, thus losing POTENTIAL purchases. But if anyone was going to buy something, they would just come back in 10 minutes anyway.

Total cost: A big fat Ũ!

Your forgetting that it takes Microsoft Certified Experts to install patches. Yeah, and it takes Albert Einstein to fix a creaking door.

lol Yup.

But these IT people get paid if they install the patch or sit in the corner with their thumbs up their butts. So do the say "well, he gets paid ์,000 a year, so we have to include that amount in the damages since we wouldn't even need him if it weren't for computer viruses like this one."?

This is one of the best description on the code red worm provided by the company who claim to be the ones who discovered the vulnerability that is exploits and the first once to disassemble the worm. Above article provides their breakdown of the worm and long as a link to a disassembled source of the worm. They also have an article on the vulnerability itself and it can be found here http://www.eeye.com/html/Research/Advisories/AD20010618.html
I found that at least these guys know what they are talkin about rather then speculating on how much damage the virus caused and how it will bring internet to hault.
