my mom had surgery a few years ago (medically necessary, not elective), and before she went in, she got to decide who her donors would be. she's anemic, so she couldn't be one for herself, and she didn't want to have strangers either, so i had to step up to the plate so to speak and bleed in a bag. it wasn't too bad, and at least i knew who was going to be getting the blood. but anyway, my point was that if you're going to have surgery or someone in your family is, try looking into a directed donor program or directed donation and then you'll know where your blood is going.
