I listen to hip hop/rap (among other types of music). My parents seem to believe that _all_ bands in the rap/hip hop genre are producing a negative image. And in a way, it's hard to blame them.. a lot of rap and hip hop is glorifying theft, killing, and using women. Personally, I tend to stay away from most of that... even still, my parents have a beef with what I'm listening to. (the roots, lauryn hill, talib kweli, dead prez, etc). It seems ri-goddamn-diculous!!!They even protest a song called "be healthy", with lyrics like "lentil soup is mental fruit, and ginger root is good for the yute". I explain it and explain it to them and they just don't seem to catch on. Anyone else have the same problem? Suggestions? Opinions? Maybe I should just blare some eminem and perhaps _then_ they'll realize... ... They also refer to it as anything _but_ "music." I've been tempted to break out the dictionary, but I'm just too damn lazy. ------------------ "Yes, I am an agent of Satan, but my duties are largely ceremonial." nope, i dont have that problem, my parents dont seem to care that much...but you could analyze the music they listen to and twist it into a negative image...everything is relative

What's wrong with the glorification of crime and using women?

What's wrong with it? Ohh lord, I hope you're joking. : )A lot of teens these days are very influential.. I used to hang out with a lot of people who have gotten into SO much shit with the law, because they want to live the "thug/gangsta life".. it can completely change certain people. Of course, people with their heads on straight that still listen to rather explicit lyrics (eminem, tupac, etc) are totally fine. You just have to stay aware and be true to yourself. I'm just saying I've seen a lot of people completely lose focus and become so corrupt with the idea of being just like their favourite musical artist that they've seriously injured others, have a criminal record, have a terrible relationship with their parents, etc.

I guess i'm lucky in that respect, I listen to the same music my mom listens to. The only music that i listen to that my mom doesn't like is Billy Joel.

Sounds like you have your head on straight there Greedo. I listen to Eminem and not only am I a straight A student I'm also a *gasp* woman. Basically it comes down to this, if the song really offends me I don't listen to it. I take the good with the bad in most other songs. As for your parents, I don't know if there's a whole lot you can do about that. I remember when I was a teenager, my parents thought the music I listen to was "devil music", of course that was after my NKOTB phase (don't go there!). Basically if you don't listen the the stuff the parents listen to, they tend to think its all bad. However most grin and hope you grow out of it, and others (like mine) just ignore it even to this day. ------------------ If the world were perfect would we be happy?

ok first of all, if all the blood in your entire bodyu rushed to your head, you would die. id also like to add that just hanging him upside down would not cause this to happen. more then the normal amount of blood, yes, not all of it. thats why we have a heart, so our blood circulates, (thats a new word that you should look into learning) and doesnt sit in our feet. think about that, it should make sense to you. second of all, i was about to bitch at you for not liking eminem, but then you can have whatever opinion you want, which is why id like to state that i feel eminem kicks ass, and you just suck.. a lot. why dont you go watch ICP wrestle in the ecw or something. about parents and music, my dad is into a lot of rock, ie: frank zappa, asia, the doors, and an assload of other bands. and i like a lot of those bands too, but the majority of the music i listen to is rap or hip hop, i mean, i like bush a lot too, but it just doesnt sound as cool in a car with 10 inch subs as some rap stuff does. anyways, ive on several occasions gotten my dad to listen to a lot of my music. yesterday we were sportin a cd i burned with 19 of my newest rap/hip hop songs on it, and he prefered eminem over some of the others like Shyne, Big L, or Big pun.

For the record, I actually like Eminem and ICP. I actually made my way to an ICP concert in my last days in Milwaukee. It was a pretty good show, saw a lot of T in the audience, and everybody got sprayed with Faygo. I would have gone to the Eminem concert, but I was so broke that I couldn't afford a sandwich, much less tickets to his concert. Also, back to Greedo's original post: The Roots kicks ass. Especially Rahzel. EVERYBODY! You need to download Rahzel - If your mother only knew . For the love of god, trust me. It is the coolest 2 minutes in audio history and you'll be playing it at parties, for your friends, for strangers, etc.
