I'm one of those people cursed with Windows Me right now and I have a problem. I can't figure out where the stupid file is that controls what runs when windows starts up. Is it in regedit or am I just totally lost?

At the risk of looking tarded once again, lets try this;
1. put cursor on desktop and right click
2. choose new > folder from menu
3. change folder name to "old startup shortcuts"
4. double click the folder icon to open it
5. click the start button
6. choose programs > startup
7. drag the icon next to the name of the program you want to remove from the menu to the old shortcuts folder.
8. you can put a program back by undoing the above.
*********************************
Hidden startup items
1. from the start menu choose Run
2. in the Open field, type MSCONFIG and click OK. You should see System Config. Utility window.
3. Click startup tab at the top. A new dialogue box appears.
4. click Cleanup button to remove items.
5. think about leaving most Windows things alone, but you can turn off many other apps/utilities.
6. if you turn off something that was a mistake, repeat above and undo.
7. Don't kill scanregistry, systray, taskmonitor, pointer, and loadpowerprofile (unless there's more than one)
I have a no-longer needed copy of Windows ME/ I Didn't Know You Could Do That book with a cdrom that was 20$ new and you can have it for 12$, CD unopened.

I am doing the best I can with what I got.
I had a problem with one line and I was waiting to see if anyone caught it. I don't have ME anymore and I can't replicate his situation exactly.
Wiley, I'm doing what I can where I can when I can.
edit// I could not have done that when I got here. Any credit, or am I a cretin?

hehe ...Ed ..you need to lighten up a bit, I'm only messing with you.
5 most common places where things start from in Windows
1. Autoexec.bat - this is in your root drive, you can edit it with a text editor. 2. win.ini - this is where HP loves to stick their freaking print manager programs for some reason. You can edit it with a text editor. 3. registry- HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run You can edit this with Regedit ...back up the registry before you mess with it. If you screw it up you can rename system.da0 and user.da0 to system.dat and user.dat after booting from a boot disk and make everything alright again. 4. Startup folder - Right-click on Start and browse to "Startup" you can add shortcuts here or delete the ones that are there 5. Login script- If you log into a domain then your login script could start programs (not likely to be your case though) email me if you need to know how to h4x0r your domain profile.

i actually have to say ed gave a very good description. i think all MS OSs besides NT and 2000 have msconfig utility. that's the easiest way for a person to remove a program from startup.

I agree ...Ed gave a very good answer, probably the best answer as it is hard to screw anything up with msconfig. I just thought it was funny that Ed was the first to answer a technical support question being a self-proclaimed non-technical kinda guy. Would anybody respect my advice on film speeds?

If you copied it out of a decent book, yah, I would.
