Not according to the Windows Media Player FAQ.
But then again, it is Microsoft, so there's no guarantee it will work as advertised.

When in doubt with video problems like this, it's best to uninstall *ALL* of the video codec's you've accumulated, then uninstall WMP, then re-install as needed. There's a lot of crappy video codecs out there that can cause things to stop working.

Microsoft's reference
IT's a file format supported by MS WinMediaPlayer7 and up
Their words:
Windows Media Redirector (WVX) : A .wvx file is a metafile that references Windows Media files that have a .wma, a .wmv, a .wvx, or a .wax file extension.
A .wvx file is only a text file that redirects you to either a .wma or a .wmv file; therefore, use the sample .wma file or the .wmv file that is described in preceding section to troubleshoot problems that occur when you play a .wvx file. If you can play the .wma file or the .wmv file in this article, the .wvx file that you are trying to play may be damaged. Contact the developer of the .wvx file to further troubleshoot this problem.
Windows Media Player (.wmp) file types and .wmx file types are reserved file types.
WMX is a media redirector; WVX is a video redirector.
Hope this helps.
