USB 2 is faster but there are more devices out right now that use firewire.  It depends what kind of hardware you have more then anything right now.  If you have a video camera that you want to connect and you happen to have a Sony Vaio laptop or an Apple laptop then you have firewire built in.  USB 2 is not yet built into any laptops.  Although I think IOGear has a PCMCIA card with a USB 2 port on it  ...but the transfer rate most likely suffers in the conversion.  I personaly have a set of firewire drives that I use to switch between computers and my laptop and they perform just fine for my data storage needs.

I think firewire is better, at least for external harddrives...

Carnivore I have one question for u.

Why?!
Usb 2.0 is way faster.

Wait about a year,  usb will once again be victorious.

USB 2.0 is a little faster than firewire right now. But later in the year firewire is expected to keep doubling as the new standards come out.

Carnivore, then there will be usb 3.0.

USB has been around a long time, and will be around for a long time.

Besides it's just competiton. W/o USB, FireWire wouldn't exist.

USB has a shared bus so the more devices the less bandwidth per device. i don't think fireware has that problem. i may be wrong but more difital devices use fireware anywayz.
