Ok heres the thing, a few months ago a file on my win2k box (/winnt/system32/config/system to be exact) was corrupt on boot and windows wouldn't load.  i was able to get to the command prompt and restore an older (6 month+) version i found on my harddrive.  windows booted fine, but all my drivrs were rolled back to the date on the old system file... of course crap ran all slow.  i reinstalled ALL my drivers (anything to avoid a full windows install... don't have time yet) and that seemed to fix everything, with no difference from what i had before.

the only thing that changed was that dvd support broke.  i have a raid array and 3 cdroms, and everything works except for dvd movie playback.  all drives will read every type of media they support, but when i try to play dvds in any of a handful (5 or so) applications they either hang or respond with a css initialization error (decss does this even).  yes i've tried reinstalling every one of them, updating my dvds rom (even to a region free one), reinstalling my drivers, reseating the drive, reinstalling aspi, directx, directshow, everything to no avail.  i'm about 90% sure this is totally a windows problem because the drive worked fine before and has never given me a problem (its a 10x pioneer dvd-114 tray).  i thought that possibly the region subsystem might be knocked off so i changed the region back and forth, and like i said before updated the rom.  nothing seems to work.  i was wondering if anyone had any ideas, possibly part of windows that i can reinstall (i have sp2 and all the updates so it won't be something as simple as that).  anyone know the specific dlls and files that handle dvd crap?  i'm running out of options besides reinstalling windows and i'm not going to do that now just so i can watch movies... but it sure would be nice.  if anyone has any ideas please let me know... for reference my system specs are:

win2k build 2195 sp2
300w ps
athlon 650 - slot a
abit ka7-100
768 megs pc133 ram
32mb geforce2 ti
promise fasttrak100 tx2

pioneer 10x dvd-114
tdk velocd 161040x
momitsu 24x cdrom

please reply if you have any ideas :)  i'm getting desperate without my porn movies.

$5 says a clean install will fix it.
