Hrm. I bought a 5400 RPM 40 gig Maxtor because I didnt' wanna spend uselss money on the 7200 RPM one. However, I'm hoping this doesn't matter, but I'm thinking does the 7200 RPM hard drive increase speed a lot?
I feel really bad and am hitting myself, but want to know if I am for good reason. Was it ok to buy a 5400 RPM hard drive? I have this weird feeling it's gonna slow my new Athlon XP 1800 down, especially during Alien vs. Predators when it starts lagging up, and the hdd light is on while that happens. Of course, Windows says it's system memory is 412 MB when this happens. I only freakin bought 256 DDR 2100 RAM, I thought that was enough money there. Argh, I can never be happy with my system. :-(

5400 - quiet, works prefectly fine
7200 - loud, faster but only really good for highaccess disks
the 5400's fine. it's nice and quiet.

You think the 7200 is loud, Spydir? Weird, I just got a 30G 7200 DiamondMax, and it's quieter than any other drive I have in there, and that's with the cover off and the computer right next to me!
Still installing stuff, so I haven't had a chance to try out drive access, but I can't wait...mmm.....

5400 should be fine. I'd consider (just me of course) getting a smaller 7200 drive and using that drive for your OS installs. Use the 5400 for storage of your MP3's, application installs, po0n storage, etc. Now,if you truly want heat+sound, go for one of the 10,000 RPM Cheetahs. God, I hate being in the same room with them. I can hear one of them over the sound of 2 box fans and 1 AC unit in my friends basement "server room"

it's louder then a 5400... atleast mine. It also matters who makes it. If you want really quiet just go ahead and underclock to 1rpm...

5400 is fine dude. unless you want raid i mean noone really needs udma100 the limit of most HDD's on their own is udma66
my quantum fireball is one of the quietest HDD's in existance and its 7200 but the price differance sint much between 5400 and 7200 anywayz.

Well at least at it’s current speed it is less likey to bust than the 7200rpm’s.
