I'll leave the sound and windows is slow probs to someone else, but if you know the make and model of your motherboard, and are VERY VERY good at following directions, you could try updating your BIOS. Go to the manufacturer's Web site and hopefully they'll have an update.

If you fuck up when flashing the BIOS, you'll be the proud owner of a dead motherboard. You have been warned.

Or you can just leave it, and let your computer think it's 8.4GB...

sounds fixed now (for now), and windows wasnt so slow this time.

can't i partition my hard drive or something so one partition has 5.1 gig and the other has 5.1 gig?

Probably not without some sort of drive overlay. The issue here is that your BIOS probably can only recognize 8 gigs of the drive (not sure how many cylinders that works out to).

You mentioned flashing your BIOS. Did you check the manufacturer's website to double-check your board specs?

Another alternative way to get all the space from that drive is to get a บ Promise card. Those usually recognize really large drives. And if you move your swap file to that drive (assuming you use one), you will probably see a good performance boost.

Edit: plus since you are running a P-1, you may want to break the 10GB into two 5GB partitions. That way when Windows crashes and you have to run Scandisk, it won't take as long to run through it.

ok i bought a 10 gig HD.
installed it, after extreme difficulty.
at first windows wouldnt load.
now my sound is all full of crap and noise.

i have a p1 board.
phoenix bios.
seagate 10.2gig HD
and not a fucking clue.

now my problems are
a> i need my comp to recognise 10.2 gig, not 8 gigs.
b> windows takes ages to boot now
c> my sound is fucked up

thats what i want to know how to do, but i dont know how to split it into two 5 gig partitions.

last night when i was in my bios, i managed to get it to recognise just over 9 gig.

restarted my computer, and windows wouldnt start.

i've got a 2.5 gig HD, which is set as master, which has windows on it, and the 10 gig is set as slave, which has not been formatted as of yet.

What I was trying to say earlier is that if your BIOS will only recognize 8 gigs, then when you run FDISK, it will only show 8 gigs of available space for partitioning. Now, if you're running WinNT or Win2k, then you can use an extended volume set to utilize the full capacity of the drive.

any the really weird noise? its fucked up.
some sounds would make a loud crackly static noise, where as if i were to get a message on icq, the sound would be normal.

the sounds arent corrupt, i know that, coz i've played the sounds, they've worked fine, its only later that they fuck up
