I have a win 2k server running IIS 5. It's a dedicated server, just for hosting web pages and the like. Recently it has been stopping the IIS services.

The error that pops up in the event viwer:

quote:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7031
Date: 8/23/2001
Time: 8:49:28 AM
User: N/A
Computer: MSERVER
Description:
The IIS Admin Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 52 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action.

There is actually 3 errors at once One for IIS admin, FTP, and WWW publishing.

This is the first time that this has done this. I have had this server running since MAY 24/7 a reboot every now and then for good measure. I reinstalled the OS after I got out of school and was done fucking with it. Since I reinstalled this has been happening.

Any help would be apprecaited.

Please no Linux VS. Windows wars. This is what I know so this is what I use.

Had a similar problem with an IIS 4 Server. Turns out Site Server was the problem. Do you have it installed? If you do, but aren't using it, remove it (I think I have detailed instructions on how to manually do that from an MS Engineer if you need them).

I've also had Exchange and Proxy both cause terminations in IIS at other times. Are either of these installed?

Hope this helps.

Kind of funny though.

edit: checked my link and the www.apache.org website was down....how ironic!!!

I don't want this taken the wrong way, and since I rarely visit these forums, I'll unlikely see your reply to further explain if necessary.

So here goes.

You claim to not know apache. I don't think you really know IIS either. Which is the number 1 reason IIS has a bad name. You see, if you don't know anything about apache and linix, you probably won't get it working. You can know nothing about windows and IIS and still get that bastard to serve web pages. That doesn't mean you've set it up correctly though. Proper configuration of IIS is a very tedious process with many, many, many bases to cover.

It's actually a MUCH more complicated product than apache, despite it's seemingly user friendliness.

Just food for thought. You may want to scourge Microsoft's site for the IIS5 Best Practices Security Checklist. Just reading that will give you a glimpse of the work that goes into to properly configuring a web box. And there are so many other things to consider when setting up a box, that list, though long, barely scratches the surface. When you throw in Intra/Extra/Internets, multiple security domains, third party apps, etc.... The setup compounds in complexity and difficulty almost infinitely.

However, if you take the time to learn all the in's and out's and actually understand why you are doing the things you are doing. You can make one hell of living with that knowledge....
