to the point: psp saves the files small but it looks like shit, the gimp is a little better and ps is the best (biggest file size) i know the bigger the file the better blah blah blah. i can't go with that, i have to be able to give thumbnail size images to dial-up users as quick as possible, and then give them bigger images as they click on the items (3 images sizes in all, thumb, small, large) anything other than ps gives me blotches on the image, lets say for example a jewelry item, in our store it is a blue background with the jewelry out in front. the blotches usually appear around the earrings (or whatever) i don't want/ can't have those damned blotches. they're not there when i save it.

anybody? anything?

when selecting the filetype, go jpg, and compress it and shit.. make the quality about 80 or a little less, and no smoothing.. the filesize should be considerably lower

Jpeg is a standard, therefore you would think these three packages would handle it all the same. If you are seeing differences, it's probably because of the defaults of each package. Play with that little slider bar in each app until you have the right balance. The differences we are talking here should be minimal, depending on how well the compression goes. Not enough to lose sleep over.

If you happen to be storing files in the native formats of each package, then you're in trouble... not only from a size standpoint, but compatibility.

If you have a (real) installation of Photoshop 5.5 or better, ImageReady came with it. Open the original document in PS and press SHIFT-CTRL-M, or File|Jump To|Imageready. Once in IR, click on the "Optimized" tab on your image window, and then dick with the optimization settings until everything's peachy.

For small thumbnails I like using an interlaced GIF. If the thumbnail is small enough, you can get away with using 64 colors (adaptive palette - the Websafe palette sux0rs) without causing any noticable change to the image.

i can't use png, we have to support as many different browsers/versions and os that is possible
