or better yet, go back to Win98SE, or forward to Win2000, or make your system dual-boot with both OS's.

WinME sucks complete ass. My store doesn't install it on systems anymore, because we got thoroughly sick of providing tech support for it - pretty much EVERYONE that bought a system with WinME on it had some sort of weird problem. "Copy & paste don't work" is one of the lesser problems I've heard of.

Whistler, on the other hand, kicks ass. I can't wait for the real release. In the meantime I'll have to resign myself to running the beta at work :

edit : for some reason System Properties says "Windows 2000," but everywhere else it calls itslef Codename : Whistler. I'll try and grab a screenshot of the new Start menu... *fapfapfap*...

Dude, Whistler is gonna be the BOMB! I have had the Beta 1 for a while. Right now, a majority of the code underneigth is Win2000 code. Whistler is basically going to be a continuation of the Win2K project/code base.

The sexiest thing about it is that interface. The screenshot is nice there The rest is pretty nice too. Special Bonus: The User Interface is skin-based. So, what you see there is just one skin. I'm not sure how extensive the skin thing goes, but I know it extends to the buttons, controls, windows, taskbar, and other such things. I have a sneaking suspicion that MS is licensing the code from DesktopX and integrating it. To me, it seems like a slap in the face to KDE/Gnome... whatever Lunix has that allows different UI skins.

The other neat thing is that it has some compatibility support for the Win9X line. It's sort of a special mode right now, but it may be integrated a bit later.

WinME was a big ol' QA mistake. I installed it on my system, and everytime the EnergyStar monitor turn-off function kicked in, the system wouldn't come back from it. It has a myriad of other problems too, but I gave that system the boot before I encountered most of them.

Just get yourself Win2K, or do a dualboot with Win98SE and Win2K. That's the best of both worlds right there.

I am a bit worried about this skinning thing. I mean, there's bound to be a whole load of programs with very specific dialog box layouts that will just look plain bent once you apply a wack ass skin to it. Also, most icons are designed to look good against a sorta greyish theme.. Like, every program is going to have to provide for custom icons, or the icons will look very odd on some skins..

If it works well i'll be pleased to have it as a feature, but i am somewhat worried about how rubbish this is going to make old programs look..

I have an MSDN subscription so I can log on to the MSDN Subscriber's Section and download any software that Microsoft makes.

I would pass out the Login and Password, but if I did anyone and everyone would be able to change my info, my password, and eventually I'd probably loose my access. That would be a bad thing!

I have a MCSE catalog subscription, plus I'm a fully registered (I get the SDK too! Oh joy!) Beta tester. No one has really said it in this forum yet, so here: Whistler is WindowsME built on the NT kernel. Which means it's hella stable plus you can play games on it. And that's the bottom line, cuz Bill Gates said so. BTW...anybody wanna copy? I have lots, but it is eight CDs...
