Now I have heard some stuff floating around about DVI (digital video interface)--- now I know VGA has been a standard for computers for a long time-- But I am getting a jucy govermental contract through the two colleges I work for to do alot of 3D modeling and plugin work for Maya and 3D studio-- now I want to buy a dual processor AMD board and all those goodies for my computer and a flat panel display-- and I finally saw one of them say they support DVI and analog-- I assume analog is what most people use now-- SO my question is Just how good is this new standard and is it worth the extra money to get cards and monitors that are DVI capable?

hell yes, get the DVI monitor. Analog flat-panel monitors are really susceptible to ghosting and jitter, which results in areas of blurriness and/or flicker on the screen. Even the really high-end monitors do this. DVI monitors don't have this problem. IMHO a high-end CRT is easier on the eyes than analog flat-panel, but the cheapest DVI display will outperform the best CRT.

/me schemes on how to sneak out the ViewSonic VPD150 I have at work...

They're harder to find, but you can get DVI CRTs too. They are theoretically a little sharper because of the shorter analog paths.
