Ok, here's one for my linux d00dz. Whenever I login to my linux system, either locally or remotely, it takes about 30 seconds for it to actually show a prompt. It's a slackware 7.1/quasi-8 (some's upgraded, some's not) and once I get my new hardware for my b-day coming up (athalon time, baby!) and stick a new video card in, I'll be getting 8 on there, and hopefully it'll fix it. But in the mean time, whadda think's the problem? ptty's?

I assume/hope you're using SSH?
Are you running any kind of firewall?

Also check /etc/ssh/sshd.conf and see if you haven't got any weirdass settings enabled.

Confirm that lot and ill see if theres anything else i can think of ... lol

make sure your dns settings are correct... that fixed my problem right up. try to turn off remote lookups, it often hangs it up if the server can't resolve your ip.

Yes Mattimeo has the right idea - check your DNS and NIS settings (if you are using NIS). The problem is that the login program is timing out when it tries to look up a hostname or authenticate you over the (nonexistent) network.

Ok... I said remotely *AND* locally. Why the fuck would DNS come into play when I'm sitting right here and typing? Yes I use ssh, btw.

The remote stuff isn't a problem, because it's obvious it's something with the login itself, if that gets the same exact problem remotely logging in gives me.

I'll just wait on getting my new hardware and my reinstall and see if it's still there...
