OK, I'm just considering options for my new system - is DDR ram really going to make enough difference to justify the added $$$ for RAM & mobo? Or is it more of a "bigger dick" thing?

My primary use of this machine is gonna be GAMES. Will the DDR give me a substantial edge, or should I save the extra bread and buy that 21" monitor?

I'm planning to slap a 1.0 or 1.2 GHz TBird (266 FSB) and a gF2 Pro into this, just in case that makes a difference in the DDR performance ... I don't think that a 1.0 could take advantage of the DDR well enough.

Opinions?

In the most non-technical sense, I think that DDR isnt worth it. its a lot of extra cheese and i heard its not even going to be supported in a few years.... Or maybe im thinking of something else..
sorry, if I'm wrong.

What are you comparing the cost of?

If you already have a lot of SDRAM that you're thinking of putting in to your new system, then use that and save yourself some $$$.

If you have to get new memory for the system, then shell out the extra $$$ and get a DDR SDRAM system. DDR SDRAM isn't all that much more than SDRAM. Applications that have good 3DNow! optimization will show a pretty good performance increase. Insist on the AMD 760 chipset. The Via and ALi chipsets are a lot slower, and you won't save much $$$ by using them.

Side note : I've been playing around with MMX / SSE / 3DNow! instructions lately. On the Pentium IIs and IIIs, shuffling data around with MMX is no faster than using normal instructions. Using SSE cache prefetch gives you a tiny performance increase (about 3\%). On the Athlon, proper use of the 3DNow! cache prefetch instructions along with MMX results in 20-25\% more bandwidth

I'm comparing the cost of new PC133 to new PC2100 DDR. Currently I can get 256MB DDR or 512MB PC133 for the same price... I'm tempted to get a gig.

In that case, the memory is most likely crap.

It won't be Windows' fault when your system mysteriously crashes every hour or so.
