I try to avoid movies on early dates b/c you just sit there and don't get a chance to get to know each other. How old are you? Do you like to cook? I've found that most girls are really impressed by a guy who can cook. It's made quite a few good first dates for me. After that...miniature golf is usually good. It's corny, but you get a chance to talk, get to know each other, and it's relaxing.
Other ideas are (if you're both athletic) a bike ride, basketball, boating, etc. Museum or a fair might be good. Or a sporting event...minor league baseball/hockey games aren't very expensive.
Hope this helps!!
