What I've heard is they spend a year following around certain type of animals with a magnified lens (so they can do it at a distance). Then they just edit it down to the good stuff.

you ever though about how rare the video in nature documentaries is? i mean how long do you have to wander around the sahara desert to come accross a sand snake in the process of killing of sand fish? and then to set up a couple camera angles without scaring the animals. im beggining to think these things might be staged.

Nature documentaries? I usually don't like them. There are some pretty cool ones, though. For example that thing we saw in 5th grade. It showed 2 snakes going at it, and very detailed. I'll never forget the sight of "snakes makin' love". Wonder whether my teacher from way back then has still got that video tape. It was hilarious!

well most of the time the hard shots are set up basically in a studio or they plant certain prey for the animals to eat. of course there is the usual occasion where you have to wait around for a while to get a certain shot but as it costs money to do these things if it can be set up then it is
