I'm interested in organizing a lan party in my area. I'm not sure how serious I am about it (as in it might turn out to be too much work!) but I think it'd be fun.. There seems to be a surprising lack of effort put into LAN partys around here as I haven't heard much about them, so I thought, what the hell, I'll try to start something.

Just wondering if anyone has anything to suggest, as to advertising mostly. Advertising without spending money at this point)

And take a look at my first ever HTML page!!
(just never bothered making one before..)

POWER!... you want to make sure that whatever you do you have plenty of outlets and support. you dont want 15-50 computers on one breaker or you will get no where..

Networking... need to have big hubs supporting at least 16 sockets. (refer to "3 deep" rule) more hubs you have less speed and efficiency (sp?).

plenty of warning!. make sure people got a month or 2 at least to know about it. and make them want to come... it should last at least 2 days and maybe have a door prize or something

local sponsors.... Here in bum-fuck nowhere (North carolina) we had a county wide party one time, and had local buisnesses donate... (ie. local mexican resturant gave us lik 3 garbage bags of free chps and a 5 gallon bucket of salsa.) you maybe could pull the door prizes out of sponsor ship.(ie. 20gig HD donated by *local comp. store* for whoever comes out on to in the unreal stats rankings)

good luck

What I think would be really cool, but maybe hard to pull off, is to have a gaming cafe. You've heard of internet cafes I assume. Well they generally suck. I want to start something like that, but have the computers dedicated to multiplayer gaming. In the daytime anyone can play, and on certian evenings only members or something. I don't know if there is enough interest for that to work though.

i heard an ad for one of those once, i forget where, and it sounded cool and all, but hey, im too much of a lazyass to do even half the things i think about doing...but the thing with it is, youd have to get really good business to keep the comps up to date.

i hope you mean switch instead of hub. just a technicality but it can mean all the difference. and if you get a few of those i hope you just had those sittin around. them things can get pretty spendy. so if your just gonna use this shit for a day or two, then it is definently not worth it to buy them. just get them from your local business/place of work.

hub = the central device on a star topology
hub = a multi-port repeater
switch = a multi-port bridge used to segment networks to reduce a collision domain
router = too expensive fer you

i'd go with a switch as your hub... get 2 24 port switches, and you shouldn't have any probs.. with a hub (2d def) it sends a all data packets out to all the ports, but only the one that is destined to receive it ever sees it... but it still sends it to the other 20+ computers connected, causing network traffic and insane collisions... you definately don't want a high collision count when running a lan-party... if you are going to have more than 6 people at yer party, definately go with a switch....

networking 101 for the day enjoy
