this is pissing me off

ever since i got this computer, it crashes almost every 6 hours. its completely nuts! ive downloaded all the win98 patches, upgrades, and bug fixes, but it crashes a helluva lot

for some reason, running a game and leaving it idle (ie, UT, homeworld, ect) keeps it from freezing so much

anyone else have this problem/know how to fix it?

but what kinda everything are you running?
(how much RAM....etc)

does it ONLY lock when you're doing something, or if you leave a screen saver running it will lock too ?

i had a similar problem with my computer. turned out to be my cd-rom drive bios (who knew?!)

Anyway, i was using a Sony CDU4821 and i had the bios version S0.M. I flashed the bios up to S0.P and it's worked great ever since. My computer rarely crashes anymore and even when it does, it's only due to the crazy graphics apps I run.

apart from that, i've had way better luck with win98 first edition. se sux0rs.

hey, how long has it been running under the current windows install?
it would be sketchy if >1 year..

im suspecting hard drive (age) or video card (drivers)

how old is the HD, and which video drivers are you running?

That vid card is ATI, and ATI drivers are known for problems. Perhaps you should check to see if they have updated drivers at www.ati.com it might help. I used to have strange crashes when browsing in 32bit color until I got updated drivers from them.

You might not want to consider this but if you have all your original software disks, try reinstalling Windows 98 and your software. If you don't have a backup device, move your important stuff to a single folder on your computer and delete everything else first, then do a fresh install.

Also, you might want to check your power management settings: if it is set to go to standby or idle harddisks after 5 hours that could be causing crashes. APM for Win98 rarely has worked properly for me, except to turn off the monitor when I am not using my computer. If you want to have something running all the time to keep it from crashing, try getting the SETI@home client from http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu and set it up to run as your screensaver. This way, your CPU and harddrive will be active whenever you are not using your computer, and might prevent crashes in the future.

hmmm...this problem sounds familiar. We had the same problem after we downloaded the Win98 "security" updates. After that our computers froze all of the time.

Something about those updates, because it was both of our computers, and he built his where I bought mine.

Grrrrrrr. We reloaded 98, don't do those security updates, and are saving our pennies for win2k.

bastards all.

I used to work with comp. repairs.... and you have NO idea how much installing win98 over top of your current version fixes shit.

its the first thing i always try because you dont loose any data. (just run the install on the cdrom)

if you have 1 64meg RAM chip, borrow from someone some RAM and try it out.. if you have like 2 32megs, try taking them out one at a time.

(if it happens rarely it may be a problem with you high mem thinga-majiga's)
