I have an ABIT BX6 2.0 motherboard, its got an AGP slot in it. With all these new video cards coming out with this 2X/4X stuff how can I tell if a Geforce3 will work? Will it work but the acceleration wont be as fast? I think the AGP slot is 2X but im not sure.

Great question. Belongs in the geek forum, but good question none the less. I haven't read a review of a card comparing AGP 2x and 4x in a looooooong time. And the reviews I DID read back then showed little improvement in 4x over 2x. But that was then.

If you've got the cash to blow on a GF3, then you have the cash for a new Abit VP6, which I highly recommend!

Yeah I was thinking about getting a new MB. The max on my current one is a P3 700MHZ. The ISA slots are worthless, should i really look into getting an abit VP6 and just transfer the stuff over. Im not going to get a geforce 3 probably not until Doom 3 or Return to Castle Wolfenstein come out and the cards get marked down.

The VP6 has it all. Dual Proc support ATA 100, plus ATA 100 raid for up to 8 ATA 100 devices. FSB in 1 MHZ steps. You can set your Mem speed to FSB - HCLK... It's flawless. Seriously.

i noticed a significant speed increase between 2x and 4x agp with my geforce2 ultra.

oh yeah and don't get a geforce3. from what i've heard so far, the geforce2 ultra is faster, or almost as fast, and a lot cheaper, considering nothing will be using the new nfinite fx engine for quite some time. might as well wait for geforce3 ultra or atleast a big price drop. i remember when i bought my geforce 256 last year. i wish i had waited 1 more month, i could have gotten the DDR for the same price.

Right now the GF2U is almost as fast as the GF3. But that will change as new software comes out to take advantages of the new features.

Same is true with the P4. Although it gets smacked by AMD right now, as new software is programmed to take advantage of SECC2 the P4 really starts to show how whip ass it's new architecture is.

Personally I don't recomend either the GF3, or the P4 right now unless you feel like blowing money.

I wouldn't buy a GF2U either though, as the price is only a few bucks short of the GF3. Right now the cards that are really giving you the Price/Performance peak are the MX line, and the new Hercules Kyro II boards.

Yeah. Those two slots usually share IRQs. Rarely have that many pci cards anyway, though.

I just said this in another forum, but...

My 16MB TNT2 card still plays everything I throw at just fine, even at 1024x768. And that's under Windows 2000.

Oh yeah, my mobo (FIC SD-11) only has 2X AGP.

Latest game played is Alice, so it's not like I'm playing Wolfenstein or anything. i.e. I wouldn't worry too much about 2X vs. 4X... if you've got even a lowly GeForce 1 you'll be ok.
