Internet banned in Afghanistan
AFP - Afghanistan's Taliban militia today banned the Internet and ordered the hardline religious police to punish users according to Islamic law, the official radio station reported.
"Within the territory of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan no governmental or non-governmental, domestic or international NGO (non-governmental organisation) or individuals can exploit the Internet," said a decree broadcast on radio Shariat.
The edict from Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar said the ministry for the promotion of virtue and the suppression of vice, otherwise known as the religious police, had been authorised to punish Internet users.
"The ministry is duty-bound to chase the violators of this decree and punish the violator in accordance to Sharia law," it said.
