Hi everyone.
I'm currently studying for an honours degree in computer science, and one of the requirements of this degree is an honours project. The topic I chose for my project is an IRC server/client. I've spent most of the semester on it so far, and it's finally at a stage where it can be tested. I'll be extremely grateful if anyone who's interested would fire up their IRC clients and connect to budgie.cs.und.ac.za on port 6667. Perhaps all the detnetters who've wanted to chat to each other on-line can get together and talk to each other, and do me a favour at the same time
What? You don't have an IRC client? Then please test mine: http://budgie.cs.und.ac.za/~dhiren
I actually think the client has more bugs than the server so I'd appreciate any feedback I can get from you guys.
Unfortunately, there aren't any services yet... I'll get to work on that after the weekend.
Thanks in advance to whoever's gonna help.

I could be a total flaming IRC newbie, but your Java client doesn't seem to want to connect to even your own server. Hrm.

Ok, you gotta streamline that client a bit. It took forever and a day to load up and didn't connect. I tried a web-based irc client that I have on one of my servers and it didn't connect either. www.cbk.net select the irc tab to try the connection yourself. Look in your server logs to see if you can see the attempts, if not make sure you have a good route going in to your server from the public internet. A lot of tests work internally in the lab but not from the public internet because people don't account for the Firewall/NAT/Proxy that public users need to go through to get to your machine. Also check the name resolves to the correct IP. I set up an IRC server once before, but it got taken apart when the boss found it
I still have my ILS server and email server though.
Good Luck with everything.

Sorry, all I had to test it with was the java client that didn't work. I tweaked the firewall a bit because some aplets freak it out, and it still didn't work. Possibly because our firewall connects to another firewall which conects to another firewall. I'll tweak around with it a bit until I get a call from security.
They get all uptight when I screw with the firewalls. What's up with that?

I got busted in about 10 minutes
<security>Did you just open a telnet session to the firewall?
<me>Um ...kinda
<security>#!*\%$
No more screwing with the security on this network for a bit. (I do have access to the firewall, I'm just not supposed to make undocumented changes) People are so paranoid about such things. How much security does 蹢 billion need, right?
I do want to get IRC running on my desk though ...then I can waste all sorts of time. All the people in school ...stay there, don't get a real job. You can't sleep in & you can't nap at your desk. What the hell? What does corprate America have against sleeping?

ugh
hi everyone
well, i just got back home after spending the weekend at my parents'... first thing i did was check out how my test run went... seems like slate was the only person able to connect lol.
i dug out the server log, and traced the lack of connectablitity to an out-of-memory exception. ugh. the client log thingie didnt show any connections tho so i dunno whats up with that. the fact that my entire university runs of dual 128-bit lines (which service over a thousand computers similtaneously) could have something to do with it. well, i put the server up again a few minutes ago, obviously i haven't gone through the log to find out exactly what went wrong, but i'll hopefully debug and have a better version running by around this time tomorrow.
thanks to everyone who tried to connect
