How appropriate a sig, man. Except, I don't want to sort out 1.2 billion people. That's a lot.

My dad is a civil engineer (structural). I don't trust him to install an operating system, much less operate a thermonuclear device for the purpose of excavation. I'd rather he just have 1.5 megatons of dynamite, thank you.

actually I'd say almost every dam built nowdays is souly for the purpose of generating hydroelectric power.

As far as i know, thats why they;re building the one in China too.

Back in my hic-ass neck of the woods most are built so that farmers can irrigate during those long dry summer months. I guess it just depends on where the damn is being built.

I think the dam that they're talking about it the Three Gorges Dam, which is being built to provide as much power as somewhere around 18 nuclear power plants. The power generated will be equivalent to burning 40 million tons of coal, meaning that there will be much less pollution as a result.

However, the reservoir created by the dam will flood a large area, including towns, monuments, and archeological sites of importance as well as factories containing badly stored waste products that could contaminate the water. The flooding will also force 1-2 million people to be relocated.

I saw a special about this on the discovery channel... I think they said it was to control floods, although it will be used for power, too. Floods cost the government much $$ in China.

As Michael said, it will force many people to re-locate, mostly peasants who have lived there for generations, who are used to living as if their entire village was part of their family. It will also destroy many religious and historic buildings and landmarks of much importance.

There are many dangers, too, such as silt build up and what could happen if a flood hits while they are building the dam. The chinese think it will work, but there are man experts, including a leading US engineer that think the project will end tragically.
