Why do I go to galleries and feel ripped off? I didn't spend anything.
So what is art?

Art galleries can't capture art; just the paintings. It's the feeling and atmosphere that the artist is in, or how much of himself that the artist puts into the work that makes it art. Museums just trade paintings like so much meat and money.
Art, as I see it, is a simple aesthetic appreciation for your surroundings. I find a lot of art when I'm not looking for it -- subtleties, precarious situations (ahem), and simply my environment convey a sense or artistic meaning.
Museums don't do art any justice for me -- just a collection of paintings and sculptures meant to entertain the 'intellectuals.' I find more art when I see the light reflecting off an old mirror onto a record collection in my dad's old attic than I do in a crowded museum.

Is this art?
some excerpts.....
"...But then, there are smarter ways of getting an "A" in art class than skinning a live cat."
"The horrific video, in which an art student and his pal skin a cat alive, pluck out its eye, pull off its ear with pliers. Slit it, stab it, kick it, hang it with cord while the animal mews for mercy."
"The dialogue on the tape? "Beautiful, man." "Let's tack it to a wall." "Whoa, look at his intestines.""
"The fact that an earlier stunt, in which the same 22-year-old slaughtered a chicken and ate it, got him a "A" in art school?"
""Accused stabs the animal with a large buck knife. This is done with the cat crying throughout ... (he) lifts the cat's legs and begins to skin it from its belly ... 'Beautiful man.' The cat mews and lifts its paw. Pliers used to remove an ear. Accused saws at cat's throat. Accused uses a dental tool to remove the animal's eye. The cat shrieks in pain ... 'Let's find its heart.' ""
"The cat-skinner hoped to post his killing video on a Web site, along with crude comics and links to the "top 100 rape videos." The psychiatrist who assessed him judged his subject to be bright, sensation-seeking, a non-conformist who "may believe he is special."
"Aren't all artists?" deadpans Froggie."
Should special provisions be made for these 'artists'? even with beauty being in the eye of the beholder, is this art? imo this is alot worse than testing drugs on animals.... mabye PETA, RSPCA, etc., should start lobbying the art industry...
On a lighter note, i remember reading this article in a newspaper about an exhibit at the museum of modern art. It was assorted peices of trash on a table. Thinking someone had made a mess, the cleaner threw it away. It was reconstructed from pictures taken of it.
I guess what is one man's trash is another man's treasure.

I believe are should be pleasing ...it does not please me to see a cat being skinned. Dali ...now that man is a genius, by far some of my favorites. I don't like most impressionism but I'm big time in surrealism ...I have an eclectic pallet for art. I just know what I like when I see it.

Dali - awesome Escher - cool art that teases your mind H.R. Giger - damn cool
Torturing animals is pretty disturbing Though I did want to see that sectioned cow ... Not really particular to the elephant dung madonna Mutter Museum was creepy and cool ...
It's hard to dictate what's pleasing. People have varying preferences. What's cool for some can be disturbing or controversial to others.

I have prints of Garden of Truth and Logos. That's my kind of art. Cool guy too; met him on another board.

I have a sort of irreverence towards a lot of art. I mean surely there's a difference between being able to make a good decoration and being able to make an accurate depiction of a real scene; Looking at the mona lisa, for example, I admit it shows a lot of talent in its painting, but I don't actually find myself particularly uplifted or entertained by looking at it as such.
cr0bar's banner that was at the top of the page on his "cataclysm" layout was much more like it to me..
(edit) and hooray for the cat killers. I probably wouldn't find it a particularly nice thing to look at, but I can only applaud the killing of cats. Cats suck.

To me, art is the weird but kick ass sculptures my g/f makes out of stuff. She's made an angel and a Jimmi Hendrix statue out of old melted vinyl records. She also made a lampshade all out of Donny Osmond records. She also has a knack for making really cool bongs out of rubber duckies and stuff like that.
-------------- Posted by Magnolia-Fan:<P>Bluntman & Chronic is the worst comic I ever read. Jay and Silent Bob are stupid characters. A couple of stoners who spout dumb-ass catch-phrases like a third rate 'Cheech and Chong' or 'Bill and Ted'. Fuck Jay and Silent Bob. Fuck them up their stupid asses.
