Well I have always had problems in school and I was never a good student, which always surprised my teachers because I had such a high level of speaking. I was classified as learning disabled but no one ever diagnosed me with a specific kind of L.D. Most of the help I got in school didn't help me at all and only proceeded to make me mad. The L.D. teachers and I figured out early that I was an oral learner as taking notes never helped me. They were also dismayed because no matter how hard they tried my hand writing never improved past a level that would be considered 1st or 2nd grade, even now my handwriting looks like it was done by a 6 year old. My spelling was also horrible still is even though my speech was at least that of an average adult at a young age. I am also extremely focused some might even say obsessed with facts, figures and maps, I really don’t know why but I just am drawn to them. I also have done poorly in areas that I am not obsessed with people have assumed this was intentional on my part and called me lazy and the like and forced me to study with no effect, prime example is Math. The other thing is that I have also always had motor and balance problems, I have never been able to play sports because I lack the physical coordination I couldn’t tie my shows until I was 11 and I couldn’t ride a bike until I was 14. My movement has always been clumsy and uncoordinated. And with all these problems I still had an IQ in the 140-155 range depending on which test I took. But the biggest problem I have is social, when I was a kid I never really had more than one or two good friends and I even then I had trouble relating to them and doing things they wanted to do. I also had until recently trouble with eye contact. Little expression. I avoided situations where I didn’t know how to act, which was most I also had a good deal of trouble understanding how I was supposed to act and what was acceptable to say in these social situations.

All these things seemed like unrelated problems and were treated as unrelated things in my childhood and early teen years. I no longer receive help with my L.D because I find that it doesn’t help, but yesterday I stumbled upon a condition Asperger Syndrome that seems to connect a lot of my problems as a child and the problems I still have. It seems I fit the classic case of someone with this condition.

Asperger's Syndrome
Asperger's syndrome was first described by a German doctor, Hans Asperger, in 1944 (one year after Leo Kanner's first paper on autism). In his paper, Dr. Asperger discussed individuals who exhibited many idiosyncratic, odd-like behaviors (see description below).
Often individuals with Asperger's syndrome have many of the behaviors listed below:
Language:
· Lucid speech before age 4 years; grammar and vocabulary are usually very good
· Speech is sometimes stilted and repetitive
· Voice tends to be flat and emotionless
· Conversations revolve around self

Cognition
· Obsessed with complex topics, such as patterns, weather, music, history, etc.
· Often described as eccentric
· I.Q.'s fall along the full spectrum, but many are in the above normal range in verbal ability and in the below average range in performance abilities.
· Many have dyslexia, writing problems, and difficulty with mathematics
· Lack common sense
· Concrete thinking (versus abstract)

Behavior
· Movements tend to be clumsy and awkward
· Odd forms of self-stimulatory behavior
· Sensory problems appear not to be as dramatic as those with other forms of autism
· Socially aware but displays inappropriate reciprocal interaction.
Sometimes people assume everyone who has autism and is high-functioning has Asperger's syndrome. However, it appears that there are several forms of high-functioning autism, and Asperger's syndrome is one form.

When I read this I was shocked, I was like “that is me”. Why didn’t anyone in the school I went to connect the dots? Most of the problems I have I have learned to deal with but it would have been easier if I knew that I had a real syndrome. I am not a doctor but it is fucking clear as day to me that is what I have. I think is interesting and was like an epiphany and I thought I would share it with you all.

you are in no way autsitic. My brother is autistic. in fact he does have aspergers which is a mild form of autism but believe me when i tell you that it doesnt mean it has subtle effects. You'll find a lot of men will exhibit results similiar to the ones you've stated there. in fact i exhibit a lot of them and you want to know why? it's because you're a man, and men will have more geometrically adaptable brains. I've always had problems with mathematics compared to most people but thats a bad symptom as i'm now doing astrophysics. Theres a differance between doing maths (1+1) and things like logic solving skills which is what more higher level maths involves. And even then it took me quit e a while to condition my brain to see things the right way but i did it.

dyslexia is more common amonsgt men it doesnt mean they are autistic. they all stem from how ALL men's brains are wired (except for gay men cos otherwise they wouldnt be gay)

Just take my word for it when i say that there's an EXTREME boundary between what you have and what you think you have. My brother who is 18 going on 19 still has trouble tying his shoe laces and still can't understand the concepts that you take for granted. He's talked to complete starngers on the train telling them exactly where he lives and assumes EVERYONE is his friend and knows what he is talking about. You and I probably have the same problems as he does in some ways but on a level where it just means you forget to tell someone the odd sentance to make them understand as opposed to start talking on a topic for no apparent reason ignoring everyone's input.

For a simple test if you can read someones's body language quite well even remotely well (like understanding why someone is angry at you) then you dont have autism.

Self diagnosis is a bad thing because you always assume the worst.

Point taken. But http://omicron.8m.com/autism/eingate.htm seems like your brother is extremely autistic not the mild form I think I have. There are huge degrees here, I am not making light of his situation but it seems like he is on the extreme end whereas I am not.
There are huge degrees on the autistic spectrum, I am not saying what I have is anywhere near what your brother has but rather that I am on the spectrum on the low end. I mean are you saying that only extreme cases are worth mentioning?

Yeah seriously its called being a man. All guys by definition will have some degree of autism. It's not gonna be a problem if you make one out of it.

I realized a few years ago where most of my problems come from.  I don't like people.  I mean, not that I want to kill people or anything it's just that I generaly don't enjoy socialization.  I don't make friends very easily as I don't enjoy idle chit-chat.  I like to debate, but I don't like wasting time trying to get people to understand my viewpoint.  Basically I don't care much for sitting around B.S.ing all day.  I also will only surround myself with people who share similar experiences as I don't like to explain things that I think are common sense.
I can spend two days working on a problem with no sleep or food until I figure it out, yet I can't stay focused on a TV show for a 1/2 hour.  It's kind of a weird combination of traits if you ask me. My personality type is INTP if anybody is into that sort of thing.
I try to compensate by doing things that are more normal such as forcing myself to go out to bars and clubs and such.  Having an extraverted gf ...er wife helps too.  I think there needs to be less classifying of your quirks and more active steps towards altering your patterns.  I'd be inclined to be a recluse if I didn't force myself to get used to being with people.

Hm, behavior for me depends on who I'm around.  I tend to clam up around strangers, but once I get to know them and they get to know me, they either end up laughing at various comments or wondering if my mind ever leaves the gutter and if they should lift a finger (har har) to help :p

Leave me alone and I tend to do stuff by myself, be it reading/watching TV, bike, rollerblade, windowshop, people watch, be pretty, play with ... well you know what I mean :p

I'm somewhere along the lines of  I/E NT J/P

And don't do the self diagnosis thing.  Somtimes ends up in a solo pity-party or an "uh huh huh, I'm stho sthpethial!".  Unless you're proud of whatever condition it is that you have ...

It’s more than the social stuff, for me I have always had problems with physical coordination, more than what should be there even for a nerdy guy I just do not have control over my limbs as well as I should. It’s also my intense obsession with facts and figures and maps; it’s hard to describe how obsessed with that stuff I am. I cannot help but memorize stats and I have a perfect memory of maps I see. It’s like O.C.D I cannot help but recite that stuff and look it up on the Internet. Most of my waking hours consists of me looking up stats and looking at maps. It’s more than me just being male I know that. I am also pretty eccentric and isolate myself in situations I don’t know. I am learning disabled but no one has ever been able to tell what I have, never in my life has anything connected my issues. I cannot tie knots except my shoes and even then I cannot do it if the shoes are not on my feet. I still cannot do a lot of normal things unless I have been trained to do it, I just cannot get my hands to do what I want them to. My mind is trapped in a body that doesn’t listen to me. I cannot draw a straight line; I cannot stay within the lines no matter how hard I try. My fine motor skills are so poor; I have never been able to advance them. I don’t really understand how crowds move when I am in them and I cannot change the way I walk. Unfamiliar surroundings scare me, I just do not know how to act at all, I freeze and this has happened when I am driving. I have a perfect memory of every map I have ever seen, I cannot reproduce them with my hands but see them in my mind. This is more than being male. If something were not scheduled in my own personal plans I won’t do it, even if it takes like 10 minutes, it would mess up my timetables. I am not just some anal-retentive guy this is more than that. If there are more than a few things going on at once near where I am I will get out the area because I makes me uncomfortable. It’s more than being male. I don’t think I have a bad case of Asperger's but I think I have it, i have trained myself over the years to overcome lots of my problems but there still there, nothing else explains all these more than average problems I have.

true, self diagnosis can be a bad thing, but if(like ic0n0) you see multiple similarities(sp?) between the textbook definition and your own experiences, then there is something there that could need looking into.

Sir? May I recommend I load myself into the reverse-thrust tubes and you use my body as decoy-fodder? This will, of course leave me splattered across deep space and unable to complete today's laundry, for which I apologise in advance.
