so, i have this friend. we'll call him "a". simple explanation of situation: "a" got a drinking ticket, on campus, from university police. ticket was for $213, and he was planning to appear in court. however, when said court date rolled around, "a" was unable to attend, and, unfortunately, was just a little too lazy to reschedule. now "a" has received a little slip of paper from the court telling him that there was a default "no contest" plea entered, and that he was found guilty. court says that he has to pay $213. this would be okay except for this little stamp that says "instead of license suspension, the court has ordered 8 days in jail for failure to pay the fine due". this is his first offense, and he is a little spazed out about this. i remember a while back that there was someone on here that was an attorney of some sort, and while i do not usually ask for any sort of advice, i am making an exception for said friend because he happens to be my roommate. yeah. please help.

His own fault for not going to court when he was supposed to, or even trying to reschedual.
He was just unlucky that he was busted by the uni-police.

unless the little piece of paper was sent registered mail/served on him, nobody can prove he recieved it... which would mean it's not a legal document.
