I just got told this brain teaser by a friend:

Three guys go to a hotel for the night. The manager tells them it's ฮ per room. So they split it evenly and pay บ each. Later on, the manager decides he overcharged them, and gives the bellboy ŭ to bring up to the men. The bellboy decides he can make a little money and only gives each guy ũ.

So each guy ends up paying ű for the room, which is ห. The bellboy keeps Ū. Where's the other ũ?

I cannot figure this out. But if you look at it the other way: each guy REALLY payed Ű.33 for the room, which is ษ, plus the ŭ refunded, equals ฮ.

Where is the damn DOLLAR!?

I'm sure this was brought up in another brain teasing thread. Best way to figure it out is take 30 coins and run through it yourself. It works out that one of the guys actually gave up Ū instead of one, or something.

Well, you're on the right track. The trick is to follow the real and not the percieved.

Each man pays 10.00 for a 30.00 room. They are refunded 5.00 making the room 25.00 and each man has, in reality, paid 8.33. with a 1.00 refund, each man has now paid 9.33. making the room 28.00 leaving 2.00 for the bellboy.

Dumbass! The two dollars went to the busboy, and the three dollars went to the three men who paid for the room. Paid ฮ for the room. ŭ was refunded, of which the payees only received ū, thus the total paid for the room was ษ + 2 for the busboy, = ห. The three dollars was paied back to the men, not paid by the men to the hotel. The Ū is included in the ห, not in the difference between the ห and the ฮ, which is the money given back to the men. There is no missing dollar, just a confused ass teaser that makes a bad calculation.

The Ū's -subtracted- from the ห, not added. The ฮ has nothing to do with this junk, it's the wrong price.

(actual price of the room, agreed at ษ)+ (bellhop's cut, agreed at Ū) = (price paid by 3 men, agreed ห)

What's there not to get?

the men didn't pay the bus boy 2 dollars extra, they lost 2 dollars from the refund.

The deception is in saying that each man ended up paying ű for the room at the end. Look at it this way:

oo oo oo ษ - note that one guy has ũ more than the other two.

so you see, after the bellboy takes his Ū, the "missing dollar" is in the hands of the first man.
