So I have a copy of slackware(we will probably change to redhat or something more current)- and my friend and I are setting up a Linux box as a DSL server, as well as my desktop computer. Most of my friends run Red hat. Now I have had a little experiance with mandrake/freeBSD/slackware/redhat, and I know that Red hat is usually the bleeding edge of the linux branches. But other than that-- what is the general preferance among gaming, homecomputer Linux OS's?

First, go to Geek Forum (DON'T REPOST THIS THREAD)

Second, read this thread: http://www.detonate.net/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000300.html

Then read this: http://www.detonate.net/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000228.html

Then this: http://www.detonate.net/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000155.html

Perhaps this too: http://www.detonate.net/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000138.html

Then try searching the net, perhaps DO SOME RESEARCH. 1 linux might not have something you need, while another might.

There, now noone should have to reply to this topic.

first... red hat's rarely the "bleeding edge" distro. Yeah, it's usually pretty uptodate, but it's not really the most. Second, Red Hat sucks nuts. The only people who actually know linux well and actually use rh are people who have to because of their job, and people who work at red hat. That's about it.

Otherwise... it doesn't make a damn difference what you use. There's no "this distro is best for..." and "this distro's better then this one for a..." crap. It's what ever you want to run as the sys admin.

Thank you! Spydir-- That is the kinda input I was asking for-- slate helped a little( yes, slate I am a newbie Lam0r)-- but I just wanted a direct opinion, reviews and research online are all nice an everything, but what really counts is what people really feel about the shit.... And for your info-- I will use the search tool rather than post more lame threads

Linux kicks ass, but in all honesty it is really lacking in the game department... that's just not what it's cut out for. If it's gaming you want, sticking with Winblows is probably your best bet.

I learned a great deal about Linux using a RedHat system for my programming projects. I still use RedHat at home, but I'm sure I could try another distro and would get along fine with it after some getting used to, since I've amassed a decent bit of linux know-how. But for now I stick with RedHat anyway, not because I'm a "n00bie" but because I've been using it for a while, and it's what I've grown to be comfortable with.

Ain't nuthin wrong with RedHat.

However, as posted above, if you're after games, you're probably best with Windows. If you want to program, or just plain learn some mad sk1llz that employers in the IT industry will like, and want to learn how an OS works, then get linux.

Definitely start with one of the newbie Linuxes like Redhat or Mandrake; there is tons of info out on the web about those if you get stuck and need help.

Then, one day, you will feel a strange compulsion to load Debian, and you'll never look back. You'll understand why, when the time comes.
