i was trying to install windows ME on my room mates computer. his puter was so slow because of all the bundled software crap. so i did the same procedure on his that i did to mine, that is booted to dos, deleted everything, then boot on ME cd. but i have 3 problems. 1-it is taking a rediculuously long time to delete everything...i think something might be wrong. 2-i cant seem to boot from the ME cd so im doing 2000 instead, and 3-after the intial installation thingy for 2000, it boots but gives me the 98 menu options, then goes to the command prompt cuz windows doesn't exist anymore. it doesn't continue with the installation. HELP!

first off, this is in the wrong forum. second, i'll tell you what to do.

1) format c:
2) fdisk /MBR
3) install windows 2000
4) don't worry be happy

... that's what I think, but hey.. what the hell do I know?

Silly CatKnight, you should *always* reformat the hard drive when changing/upgrading operating systems, especially Microsoft operating systems.

Here is how I would do this:

-Boot off the ME CD and then format c:
-Make a directory such as c:\winme and
-Run "smartdrv" in the directory with all the WinME .cab files on the CD (This is not really optional. DOS mode without smartdrive is why everything is running so slowly)
-While still in the directory with the .cab files on the CD, copy *.* c:\winme
-Run setup.exe from the c:\winme directory. You no longer need the CD.

The reason you should always copy the .cab files and install off the hard drive is that in the future when you're installing new hardware or drivers, Windows won't ask you to stick in the CD. It will know where to look.

No offense, but since you don't appear to be able to install ME properly, I wouldn't recommend doing 2K. If you insist, adapt the above procedures. Note that the installer executable for NT is called "winnt.exe", not "setup.exe". I also wouldn't advise converting the drive to NTFS (Win2K's setup will ask you if you want to do this).

the thing that sucks most about NT4 is that you've got your choice of either fat16 of NTFS.

since fat16 abhorrs partitions over 2 gigs (this happened when i got my 30 gig drive), i ended up with NTFS i didn't want. leave it to microsoft to fuck things up.

I hear an early release of nt4 also supported OS2 partitions (though did not have the facility to create them). If i remember correctly support for this was removed in SP3.

ok well i installed win2k on my puter with no problems. i couldn't format my hd (or my room mates) because we have 10 gigs of mp3's and such and noplace to put them. anyways i managed to install win2k on my room mate's computer, but it wont boot up now. while saying "starting up" it freezes when the progress bar gets to the end. shit.

also i cant access the cd drive when booting up in dos unless i boot from the 2k cd which starts the installation

the reason deleting the Windows directory took so long is because smartdrv.exe wasn't loaded. Not a big deal, it just makes it run a LOT slower.

As for the sound drivers, try Winfiles and see if there's an updated driver for the sound card.
