There was a mountain lion stuck outside of LA.
It was sick.
So they shot it.

It was a sick animal," said Monrovia police Lt. Steve Cofield. "It was impossible to tranquilize and remove the animal without a risk to residents and kids walking to school."

"They did not want to risk the animal taking off and running loose in the area," Cofield said. "It was (in) a residential neighborhood next to a major boulevard."

i saw that on the news this morning, a mountain lion wandered into someone's back yard. last i saw they were about to shoot it with a tranquilizer dart...

It should of been tranqed.

They had HOURS before the comunity would of been indanger from this animal and they had the time to take care of it without killing it.

if they were worried about it comming back i know of 3 places without thinking hard that would of taken it in and saved its life.

Now, if it had wandered in around noon then they would of had no other options but to end it quick but they had time before the residents woke up.

yes, but then they didn't have a clue as to whether the tranquilizer would take effect immediately or not, so there was still that period of uncertainty where it could break away from their grasp(a sick 200 pound mountain lion wouldn't exactly come along without a fight) and hurt the people of the residential estate it was in.

In Murrieta, about 70 miles southeast of the city, a 140-pound male mountain lion blamed in the killings of two pet llamas was shot to death in March in a state-approved hunt. Fish and Game issued the rare hunting permit because it had killed livestock and posed a threat to humans.

my aunt lives in Murrieta, and she says that there arent any 'pet llamas' up there. strange. i dont see how killimg llamas is a threat to humans...

I think that sometimes some people just need to affirm their role as the dominant species on the planet  ...ie the police have itchy trigger fingers.

Sad, but keep in mind it was a lion  ...I wouldn't want a lion wandering around when it came time for my kids to go to school.

Watch-out kids!

Augh!

At the time when the tranq was still an option the people of the "residential estate" were not part of the equation.  They were still in their homes out of harms way.

I would've shot it.

It was sick and already in someone's back yard, so I don't see where it's worth taking any risk to humans for a sick mountain lion that could have any number of diseases, many of which cause dementia and viciousness.

It's an animal. It's not worth a risk to humans.

Just because it is cute doesn't mean it is harmless.  It's a wild moutain lion, it's not a domestic pet.  The jaws of a cat are stronger then that of a dog and from the pic the cat looks to be about 40 or so pounds, same size as a pit bull  ...would you send your kid off to school with a wild and sick pit bull running around your neighbors yard?

It's like when people act surprised when Shamu eats one of his trainers.  People are always like "he's so friendly  ...I don't see how he could have done that  ...it must have been an accident".  How about the fact that it is a wild animal?  It's a killer whale  ...it's got killer right in the name!  The trainer is stupid in the first place for jumping in the water with the thing.  Would you jump in the water with a killer shark?  Of course not  ...but a killer whale, they're sooo cute!  Dummy ...they can eat the sharks.  I think people watch cartoons too much.

This also brings to mind that video of the girl who got her leg chewed up when she tried to hop the fence to pet a polar bear.  I guess white fur makes it harmless.

Killer whales are so named because of the way they literally savage the sea lions they eat.

A killer whale catches a sea lion in its jaws, uses its teeth to merely hold on to the sea lion, and then the whale shakes it to death before swallowing the sea lion whole.

Personally, I'm not so sure Shamu knows the difference between sea lion and human in a wet suit with flippers.

I've seen tapes of killer whales playing volleyball with seals.

apart from the distinctly different smells and tastes.

a killer whale might mistake a human for a seal, but it'd bite into the human somewhat, realize that what it has got in it's mouth doesn't taste like food(a seal), and let go.

but that is very rare.

< sick lion ate a dog. >

Yup, in today's CNN; the lion was a (gasp) dog-eater!

Oh my!

That critter looks sick.

I'm sorry, looked sick.

Thankyou nice men for defending me.

Someone said a net wouldn't hold a mountain lion; *sure it will.  Depends on the net!

Come on, it was a mountain lion.

At least your not whining about someone killing a bear. Fuck I hate those people. Grizzley bears, save 'em yeah. Black bears need a serious thinning of the herd.

Trust me, I live around them. It's getting bad.

One less cougar is no skin off my nose either. There's enough of them here. Meeting a cougar in the woods is much much worse than meeting a bear. Any bear. Bears have very bad eyes, so you can (ie: it is possible to) scare them off or avoid them all together.
Coguars have no such weakness. If you see one, he's probably stalking you. If he's stalking you, god let you be armed. If he attacks, you'll have to kill him before he'll stop.

One sick cougar finds itself in a residential area and gets killed. Its a small shame, but no more than that..
