So as some of you know, I've been trying to get on with the FBI. I just found out today that I'm disqualified for guess what...my vision. You can't have worse than 20/200 in either eye and still be accepted. I'm planning on getting the lasik eye surgery, however they require 1 full year to pass after the surgery before they will consider you.So, to recap: I graduate in July. The FBI was the only job I was pursuing. I won't be able to work for them for at least a year. I should've known better than to get excited about something good happening to me. I finally found what I want to do, only to be told that I can't do it because of my eyes. I hate my life. I'm going to go be angry now. Posted by Necromancer on May 09 2002,02:10
Know how you feel m8. I couldn't get into the royal marines cos of my eyesight even if i did have laser correction. Can't really give any "Legal" advice on how to dodge the system but there are usually loopholes in things like this if you really want to get through. Mr B, you have no idea how I feel about that.I always wanted to be an astronaut/fighter pilot. My eyesight sux. Now I'm a photographer with a weird website. Posted by editor on May 09 2002,02:46
Fuck...a year? Beldy! Posted by Anztac on May 09 2002,05:20
I can't drive. Never will be able to. Oh yeah, that also rules out the FBI, Piloting, boating liscense, gun liscence, hell, I can't even be a Taxi car driver. 20/400 vision in the left eye, 20/200 with correction (that's as good as it gets.) Particially detached retina in the right. Hell... I can't get a good picture of someones face until I get a chance to see it pretty close... God ,I'm going to stop talking about this now, I ussually try not to think about it. Moral of the story: Be grateful. I'm grateful they were able to fix my rretinas (to an extent) or I would be blind like my grandpa... Posted by WrineX on May 09 2002,21:48
Seems that i'm quite lucky with my eyesight, although i will never ever be able to be a pilot or the like either. My eyes had to be put " inline" twice. My right eye still "squints" but i can live with it.but can you tell me what 20/20 or 20/400 vision meaNs? i know i have to wear lenses that -2.75 dpt. one of them is "toric". Anyhow sometimes i wished i could get up and see the world clear. I do however sleep with my lenses in too Posted by j0eSmith on May 10 2002,04:33
20/20 is average or 'perfect' vision. Its what other vision ratings are based upon. 20/30 vision means that what someone with 20/20 can see clearly at 30 feet, you can see clearly only at 20. 20/400 therefore means that what some with 20/20 can see clearly at 400 feet, you can see clearly at only 20. Its also possible to have better than 20/20 vision. 20/17 for example (which is what I have Left: 20/30 Right: 20/20 Combined(both eyes): 20/17) means that was someone with 20/20 vision can see clearly at 17 feet, you can see clearly at 20. In other words, how you see things that are 400 ft away is pretty much how I see things that are 20 ft away.

feel free to hate me for having 14/17 vision. (at first i paniced when the doc told me i was 14/17, but then he told me that smaller numbers are better, so im better than 20/20.)

dude..that really sucks. It might not make it any easier to handle - but other companies will pay lots more $$$$ for your skill set. If you made it this far in their process, you can still have the surgery...and make due for a year. In the mean time, you pick up more certs, save some coin, and get a solid year experience. In the grand scheme of things, a year isn't that long. Posted by Beldurin on May 12 2002,06:12
Well, I found a place to live in Indy for the next year (living w/my cousin in a small condo on the NW side), so now all I have to do is find a job somewhere in town. Time to call in a few favors...

I used to sleep in my lens too and it cocked my eyes up. Now after a while I can't hardly wear my lens longer than about 3 hours before my eyes burn. Also it can lead to some infections.. I took them out every three days and cleaned them like the doc said... I hate stupid DR's dave Posted by jim on May 14 2002,14:39
20/15 vision in both eyes here. Was all excited to be a Marine Corps pilot, till I found out I was too tall! DOH! Posted by Nikita on May 14 2002,15:54
How tall are you? I'll take the extra height Posted by jim on May 14 2002,23:10
6'5"I think 6'2" or 3 was the cap for the F-18 Posted by Uberkommando on May 15 2002,04:45
Yeah, at least there are a few advantages to being short. My entire family is under 6'....and my dad's an F-15 pilot, my uncle's an F-18 pilot, my other uncle's a C-5 pilot... haw haw haw... ...but I'm FUCKING COLORBLIND! Posted by veistran on May 15 2002,06:26
it's generally 6'3" for fighter pilots. And even then, you have to be in really tip-top physical shape at 6'3" to be one. Any taller and it's really you vs. the absolute limits of the human body. Posted by Necromancer on May 16 2002,00:14
being too tall not only means you can't fit in the cockpit but that you red out or black out too easily because of the length of your body

this being the more important thing... |
