Forum: Rants Topic: Friday Night Server Replacement started by: Wolfguard Posted by Wolfguard on Apr. 06 2002,00:14
Welp, its friday and i got a dead server. Got the new one in the rack and the restore of 100+ gigs of data is going. Im bored. Soooo Bored.... Posted by just_dave on Apr. 06 2002,00:39
That sucks, I had to do that with about 18 gigs of user email with a dead beast of a mail server once. I know its nothing like your 100+ gigs but I know how ya feel.-dave Posted by editor on Apr. 06 2002,02:57
Mr WG, have you seen the post by Beldurin about his truck all fux0red? It sounds reminiscent of a certain post on Detnet and Masterslate.... Posted by Wolfguard on Apr. 06 2002,18:17
I saw that too...anyway... 2am and the bastard finaly decides to join the domain and im up and running. I head to the door, say bye to the security chick, and walk out. The world is suddenly full of static! It was SNOWING at 2am in deleware! In April! I could not see the far end of the parking lot (about 100M) away. Fucked up. well i'll see your restore and raise you a switch: i spent the most beautiful weekend we've had so far this year (sun, girls wearing skimpy things, queen mother dead)ripping out prehistoric *TOKEN RING* (/me weeps) CAU & LAM crap from one of my buildings, only to discover that my cablers can't even lay one measly bit of fibre properly. so instead of spending the day playing with all the nice, new, shiny (/fwap) Extreme kit (which would have at least been some consolation) ,i had to put the whole lot back. i hate the world.

That sucks, man. I know how you feel though. Next weekend (which is supposed to be really nice here) I will be spending many hours taking a LAN from T/R to Ethernet as well (I'm assuming that's what you did). In addition, have to coordinate with the corporate ppl who control the WAN to collapse 2 contiguous class C's (in 3 dif. subnets), re-configuring the entire site for DHCP, setting up an ISA server to do username authentication as a web proxy, etc. The really bad news? I don't get paid for any of it. Class project for grad school. Posted by just_dave on Apr. 08 2002,15:30
dood you should still get some greenbacks for that. I know the feeling though. You going with a dhcp capable router or are you going to use a dhcp server? Good luck on those subnets, I know it can be done but have fun anyways.dave Posted by Crafty Butcher on Apr. 08 2002,15:38
ouch, you win mate. i don't get out of bed for less than double time. that's a hell of a workload for one w/end too. how many users? Posted by Beldurin on Apr. 09 2002,00:25
It's an office bldg., and I'm guestimating around 100-150 users, so it could be worse. The company guy is working on using the IEAK to set up an automatic browser config. script so we don't have to point every f'ing login to the ISA for proxying. At least this setup makes sense. The used to have 2 T/R class C's, 4 ethernet class C's (one w/a standard /24 the other split w/ a /25), all bridged through 2 physical T/R and 1 physical Ethernet interfaces on their Cisco core/WAN router. Web access restricted by static IP's entered into a checkpoint firewall filtering table. GAAAAAHHHH!!! Oh, and did I mention that they're operating a Bay router in parallel w/the Cisco router, but noone is really sure what's going through it? At least they're listening to my recommendations...bleh. Ah the joys of corporate IT. old office building LANs never make sense because they just get added to and added to every time the business wants to "shift things round a little", till you end up with a ip range with big holes all over it (is it accurately documented? is it fuck) and a whole bunch of switches that don't correspond even to basic logic - let alone your LAN map. the fact that they're getting you to sort it out for them for free is pretty much scandalous IMHO. Get the corporate guy to take you for the biggest lunch imaginable and tell him to put it on expenses. in fact make him get you laid. just remember that one day someone is going to pay you an obscene quantity of money just to tell them how shit their network is. and on that day you can laugh. We've already gone through and documented the worksite pretty well. And to clarify, I don't get paid, but my program has a contract with the company, so it does.
God, I hope so... |
