Yesterday, my power supply exploded.

Yeah, exploded. I was installing a new video card, and after putting it all in, I put the power cable back in. Moments later, it made some loud noise, caught on fire inside (it lit up the whole back wall of my basement) and released plenty of smoke... at the same time the cd rom drive even opened. I went out that same night to get a new power supply, but it still won't boot (monitor doesn't even go on when I turn on the box, even with my old vid card). I'm guessing that the mobo has been fried, along with god knows what else (cdrw, cdrom, sound card, cpu, nic?) but I haven't had the opportunity to test it all yet.

But even worse.... my two 20 gig hard drives appear to be toasted as well. This is especially bad for me, since I had just bought one of them only about 4 months ago.

To add insult to injury, one of those hard drives contained my english term paper, which I had nearly finished. 10 pages in length, and it's due in 2 days.

I am so fucked, I'm not in the mood to shell out hundreds of bucks to replace this stuff, and I am definitely not feeling good about rewriting my ten page paper from scratch within 48 hours. Not to mention that I'm gonna be on withdrawal from my computer habits indefinitely (im stuck writing this on my mom's computer, yuck). Any bright ideas? moral support? large donations of cash?

Well, aren't you lucky you have your mom's puter!

did you try hooking up the hd to your mom's?  I don't suppose your hd's have fusible links, do they?  You can bypass them...

I guess you'll have to start remembering that term paper... shit, but you did it once already...

good luck

bitch to the PSU makers say you want re-embersment for what their PSU did to your property. As PSU's go they're arent supposed to explode when you put a gfx card in.

while you're at it, see if you can shell some cash out of whoever made any of the other stuff that might or mightnot be dead. ˙See if you can get in contact with some who made the HD, tech support most likely, and see if they'll pay for a local company to do data recovery so you can get your term paper back.

edit: oh yeah...  hold out for as much as you can.  Remember when you were a kid and your parents wouldn't let you have a cookie but you screamed until they gave you one?  Try that.  Be a little more mature about it though (just bitch a lot), you'd be surprised at how well it works.

yeah, remember, add 30% to each component. because they'll try to remove 30% of the reimbursement.

(or just claim that the system was top of the line, and get as much as possible :) )

I don't mind if he uses it... ˙the only problem I would have is if my site was short on bandwidth, but I'm not so it's cool :)

edit: plus he's got a cool name  thumbs-up.gif

Ok, my cpu (celeron 366, which I had overclocked to 550) is still alive.... the mobo is definitely dead though, and so is my ram. One of my 20 gig hdd's is dead, but I think the other one is still working (of course not the one with my fucking paper on it). I hope to god that my cdrw was unscathed but I don't know yet.
My parents agreed to help me pay for all this shit, so I'm probably gonna go to the comp show next weekend and replace it. In the meantime, I'm frantically rewriting as much of the paper as I can... I have a feeling that asking for an extension would get me nowhere.

Ok so my paper is done finally, and i'm handing it in tomorrow morning. The hard drive that got destroyed is under warranty, fortunately. The cdrw drive is dead and im not sure if the warranty is up yet.... gotta call up sony. Everything else is basically toast. So im going to the computer show on saturday or sunday to buy all new shit... probably an athlon xp 1700 or something to that effect.... hell, i needed an upgrade anyway.

being the pestimistic optomist that I am (I know I spelt something wrong there...), here's my final word: It sucks monkey dong that it happened, but atleast it gave you a good reason to get new stuff

It's a silver lining sort of thing...a really expensive, genuine silver lining sort of thing.

be sure NOT to mention that to them when you bitch for your replacements.

Ok, I think I might have finagled a replacement for my cdrw drive out of Sony. I talked to the tech support people for a while on their stupid chat thing, and then on the phone.... Never mentioned a single word about the little "mishap" that actually caused it. Now they're supposed to e-mail me the info on how/where to ship the old drive to so I can get it replaced, but it's been like 6 hours and I still haven't gotten any e-mails from them....

Also I got my RMA stuff approved for my hdd and I'm gonna send it in tomorrow... and on sunday I'm going to get my new computer shit. What a relief.
