I was using Trillian to connect to AIM so that I wouldn't have to deal with all the ads and security holes (can we say holy fucking hack attempts, boys and girls?).

Well today I started getting disconnected with the message that I'm using 'unauthorized' software and AOL's not gonna let me connect anymore unless I go download their client.

I have news for AOL. That piece of spyware hackable shit will never grace my hard drive. I'm dumping AIM entirely as a means of communication. I just don't see opening my box up to the kind of security risks found by our friends at w00w00.com as an alternative to using Trillian. So what this means here is that anybody who has/had my AIM nick will be conducting an exercise in futility by trying to contact me that way.

I have other means of contact: e-mail, IRC, ICQ, Y! and MSN. Anybody who actually talks to me will hafta find me via one of those.

As for AOL, the pathetic piece of shit that company is, I really don't care what happens. They are a monopolistic worm that bleeds the life out of true technological and communications progress. They attempt to destroy cooperative growth by refusing to share a sandbox with the other kids, every new product they put out has more security problems and is more invasive to the user's system than the one before it, and their only goal seems to be to stifle change and growth by throwing around huge sums of money.

So, the eat-my-ass award of the day goes to......... AOL/Time Warner!

Apparently, AOL seems to think they don't make enough money charging people ungodly amounts for the crappiest(and stragely, most popular) ISP in exsistance, they think they also have to get their little $.10 revenue from showing you ads for shit you could a fuck less about. Sadly, I cannot boycott their services, I have a huge group of friends on AIM (can you say 250 on buddylist?), so I have to continue to connect with AIM and Trillian. God damn greedy bastards.

Good luck getting Trillian to work with AIM. Once they detect that you have Trillian, you'll get the 'disconnected for unauthorized software' message.

Hence, I apologize to all 170 people on my AIM contact list... but I'm not running AOL's client. Too many security holes.

if aol were really smart, they'd develop their own prog. that does the same thing as Trillian, but with their ads...

just on a personal note, even if they did that, I would still use Trillian...

Out of (mostly) spite for AOL and the evil known as AIM I registered accounts on MSN and Yahoo!. Unless AOL allows Trill again, I won't be going back to AIM (even though probably 3/4 of my buddies were AIM-only). If someone wants to contact me, they can now try my ICQ (45020657), MSN (saboetage@hotmail.com) or Yahoo! (Saboetage) accounts. If they don't like it, they can email me. BAH!

AIM has more security holes then windows ME, if that's even possible. Most common and probably most dangerous are number of buffer overflows attacks. They can be hard to exploit though.

It randomly adds files to your computer without your permission as well as steals personal info off of it.

Spyware, enjoy!

/me joins kuru ( a while back..).

I liked how they (AOL) used it's(AIM's) own buffer overflow problems to execute code on your computer.

Heh. You think < MSN messenger > is any more secure? Truth is, any service/application on any operating system is generally insecure.

And I'm also fairly angered by AOL cutting out Trillian, while keeping all the rest of the TOC-using services (fire, gaim, etc) alive. But it's nothing new from the tech sector. Nowadays, everybody who makes software has some kind of corrupt angle.

I'm damned happy they still let gaim run.  Know why?  CUZ I USE GAIM ON MY LINUX BOX.  If they cut it, I'm gonna be pretty pissed.  There's numerous hottie hoochies from school that use AIM that I feel the need to talk to.  Why do I want to talk to them?  They're hottie hoochies.

AIM: Bringer of the hottie hoochies.

According to Trillian's own documentation, they didn't use TOC. Of course, they could be lying out their asses.
Posted by veistran on Feb. 19 2002,03:37
trillian uses OSCAR, because TOC sucks the royal phat one.

AOL has been making TOC shittier and shittier since they came out with it, note how you cannot search for users via e-mail address with TOC, that was originally a feature of TOC that was subsequently removed the from TOC.

Isnt their little software detector that finds Trillian invasion of privacy???
Posted by kuru on Feb. 19 2002,13:46
Hence I don't use aim anymore at all?

It was less a problem when Trillian could 'trick' aol into thinking it was talking to it's own aim client. It never actually detected a difference.

Now it does. Now kuru doesn't aim.
