yeah, but usually only with the same 2 or 3 people who seem to have this 'i hate you but i have to follow you around because i wanna be able to quote you later' fetish....

in that case it's either an ego boost or annoying, and almost never harmful.

then, a little less often, i run across a true psycho who has the 'i love you therefore i must spend every waking moment following you around and making your life hell.. by the way did i mention i'm an insomniac too' thing going on. it makes me glad i live in a state that allows concealed carry and has anti-stalking laws.

Care to elaborate on those anti-stalking laws (or should they be anti-stocking laws in light of the forum title?)?

basically if someone is following you around all the time, threatening you, trying to hurt you, they don't actually have to succeed in hurting you for the cops to get involved.

you still have to know you're being stalked, but at least as it stood when i had that unfortunate experience with those friends of my former roommate, the cops couldn't say 'well if they haven't shot you yet...'

Was she ACTUALLY retarded, or was she just some sort of obsessive stalker?

53 Chromosomes???????!!!!!!!!!!!?????? Jesus Motherfucking Shit Christ!!!!!!!!! Normal humans have 46, 23 from each parent. Anomalies are usually 47 or 45, but 53? Was she the product of some bizzare experiment?

Yeah, you have to be mistaken there. Almost all abnormal numbers of chromosomes are in the 44-47 range, at least for children who actually live. A karyotype of 69 (all chromosomes triploid), for instance, is possible, as are cases of polyploidy (>4 of one chromosome) but such a baby would never survive more than a few hours after birth. What you're probably thinking of is the 47-chromosome Down's Syndrome, triploidy 21 (three of chromosome 21) which is the most common birth defect in the US and results in mild to severe retardation.

Edit: Apologies to all for appearing to be a "pedant"; the fact is that when I read the post I wondered if such a thing was possible and, through a Google search, came up with the majority of the information here. I probably should have cited the fact that I didn't remember much from my Biology class on the subject except that Down's Syndrome was caused by an extra one of one of the smaller chromosomes...

Oh, shut up.

You must be one of those guys who points out lame exclusions to unimportant facts and arguments that no one really cares about, just to parade trivial-yet-technically uncontested knowledge...

i,e - pointing out the fallacy of such idioms as, "don't count your chickens before they hatch," for as any ornithologist will tell you, the embryo encased in the eggs of xanthocephalus, gallus, and other varieties is not truly a "chicken" until the maturation stage. You see, the spinal column of the "chicken" is fused in the thoracic to sacral areas, whereas the newborn "chick" has a very immature skeleton and cones of cartilage. And that’s just one major difference. Therefore, it would be a physical impossibility to count one's "chickens" before they hatched: not only are there no chickens to count, but there will be no bona fide chickens for a long period of time.

Lord.

p.s. - I thought your "pedant" comment on Sithiee was humorous, but simply having a large wealth of knowledge does not make you wise, as ostentatious characteristics are still capable of emerging. (and yes, the wise are predominantly humble)

As I like to say, if you zealously and pretentiously strive to be deep, you'll only come up shallow.

Bleh.

Sorry about that. Apologies have been posted retroactively.

Actually I think it's funny that I went straight from yelling at Sithee for using the technical term "chad" to then making a very similar mistake myself. Without even realizing what I was doing too.

Irony... It's not a good idea to always be laughing at yourself, but in this case I realize that I did something rather ridiculous. Apologies once again. I don't have that much esoteric erudition really (ooooh... double irony...) but I try to make up for my lack of knowledge through a disproportionate number of opinions... (and that closing comment isn't irony, but self-effacing humor, the objective of which is to put the whole thing in the past (although commenting on my intentions in this manner is indeed ironic (as is this.)))

actually down syndrome is linked to the "gart" gene on the 46th chromosome. The appearence of the 47th chromosome called "cletus-ism" and is usually found in imbreeding yokels such as Al Gore and George W Bush. So get your FOOKING SHEET RITE.

Hey, don't sweat it Mikey, we all have our idiosyncrasies and whatnot (me especially )

It's such a fine line, isn't it? Sometimes technical knowledge makes for good arguments and interesting conversation (i,e - our "science v. faith" or "smoking" threads) and sometimes it's just uncalled for...

Anyhow, the subject is burnt, so I'll just shut up now.

That's all I remembered also. For some reason I also remembered, incorrectly, that normal humans have 52... 52+1 = 53...

oops.

my english teacher was saying the other day (i have much reason to doubt this, cause shes a dumb ho) that inbreeding, while more likely to produce retards/deformeties than non inbreeding, it also is just as likely youll get a better person out of it...we just arent as likely to notice.

but like i said, shes a dumb ho, she might have just been talking out of her ass.

the reason that inbreeding causes more deformities and mental retardation than non-inbreeding is that most of these things are caused by recessive genes.

recessive meaning that if each parent is a carrier, the offspring that gets the gene from recessive gene from each parent will have the affliction. the parents, who each have one of the recessive genes, don't generally have the affliction or even know that they are a carrier.

so what's this have to do with inbreeding?
well, there's a much higher chance that genetically close (siblings, parent-child, first cousins) members of a family will carry one recessive gene. so if you have a brother and a sister, both who carry the recessive gene, their odds of meeting up with someone randomly in the population who also has the recessive gene and passing it on to their kid is much much smaller than their odds of passing it on if the brother and sister were to produce offspring.

this is very clearly showin in royal families with the prevalence of hemophilia. royal families, in order to keep the 'blood lines pure' often inbred and intermarried for centuries. the royal courts of most of the european countries are probably related because of this, and they continued to only marry european royalty. so most of them ended up having a recessive gene that produces hemophilia. when two of them would get married, and produce the next heir apparent, the son would then have hemophilia. as far as i know, hemophilia is passed only to males. once this intermarriage and inbreeding was studied, and the high rate of hemophilia was found, though, they named it 'the royal disease.'

so, while 'nothin` says lovin` like marryin` your cousin,' it's also quite a risk of genetic illness.

just a little fyi though, president FDR married a distant cousin of his. eleanor roosevelt was FDR's distant cousin, and a niece of teddy roosevelt. guess that's what they mean by 'keeping it in the family.'

However, it was recently discovered that the majority of people in europe have been descended from just 10 people who migrated to europe a looooong time ago.

You'd think we'd be more didease ridden, wouldn't you...
