A friend of mine in Calfornia made โk in web design. I live in Vegas, work for the state, and I dont make nearly that much.

He only uses Dreamweaver and basic html. He's unfamiliar with unix servers, can't set up a cgi-bin, does not know ASP, the only javascript he's seen is the generic code spit out by dreamweaver and fireworks. โk!!!!!!!!!

It used to drive me nuts to hear about stuff like that. I chose to stay at the university because I have a good position, cannot be fired, and outstanding benefits. Granted, I make peanuts comparably, but my job is not going anywhere.

Justice was served, more or less. He worked for a start up .com, and as you know, they are dying fast. He was laid off yesterday.

He tells me that all he has to do is "just spend a couple of weeks learning a little ASP" and "some javascript" and he can make ๪k out there in California. IS THIS TRUE! It cant be true. Tell me he is living in a dream world!!!!
(SOB)

Granted Vegas sux donkey balls job-wise, out here you have to know a LOT to get any type of web development job at a high salary.

AAARRRRRGGGGGHHH. I need to move. Today.

keep in mind most those jobs are in Silicon Valley, and it costs about 55,000 a month for a apartment with nothing more then room for your bed, one small table, a microwave, and if you're lucky a toliet.

I dunno if that's intirely true, read it in Wired or head it on Geeks In Space (/. radio)... can't exactly remember...

็,000 in californa? poor friend.

literally.

with cost of living as high as it is there, if your friend was worth much salt, he'd make twice that, at least.

With payments that low compared to what you're gonna be paying for rent- you'd damn well better start commuting.

Kuru, I've been getting by just fine on ฤK for several years now. You just have to know what to look for, which in my case means renting a house and sharing it with friends.

Of course starting April 2, I will be making ๑K a year as an entry-level Unix administrator. I don't know what I'm going to do with that money... but I have some ideas...

He's in Orange County. Update: No interviews or callbacks as of yet. And he's having problems putting up his Pers. Web Server so he can start learing ASP :0

I see the cost of living issue. My cost of living here is pretty low. Rent is not that expensive, and no state income tax.

I still dont feel better.
