Topic: Compromise your beliefs for an education?

Soon as summer's over I'm starting my first semester at a catholic school by the name of Father Michael Goetz.

I ,by definition, am not very religious and I take pride in the fact that I am not forced to partake in activities that are physically or emotionally strenuous because of what I was told to believe in when I was young. (I mean no offence to any other religion)

What troubles me is that I may come across hostility in the new school because of my lack of "faith". Based on what I've seen from the outside it looks like a very nice school and I would hate to compromise my chance for a good education because I don't believe in certain higher powers.

And so I must decide, do I pretend like I believe everything they tell me and pretend like my faith is the only thing that matters or come clean if I am asked and potentially risk my future?

*sigh* I wish I was back in kindergarten making mud cakes or something.

Solution: Don't go to a fucking catholic school.

But look on the bright side, hot catholic school girls.

Appreciate the sentiments j0e, the nearest alternative to the catholic school may as well have metal detectors and full body cavity searches considering the kind of people that go there.

And yes, hot catholic school girls are a bright side.

Actully I'm pretty sure (don't take my word for this) that most catholic school students are probably like you and just there for a decent shot at an education..

..and the hot catholic school girls.

wow an intelligent newbie with a good first post...havn't seen one of those around in a while...

p.s. high school chicks with amazing perfect legs forced to wear short skirts constantly...how could you go wrong? that's gotta be worth any possible spiritual strain they can throw at ya

Which reminds me- we get uniforms next year. Everyone is like "Awwww man this is bullshit!" and me and my friends are like "Allright! Skirts"

As long as they're not grey.

You shouldn't have a problem with being non-religious in a Catholic school, as long as the school is not overly strict. I speak from experience...

Since 1st grade I've always been to Catholic Schools, when I was younger I used to believe in God but I was never excessively religious and it was fine. Then, at about age 16 or 17, suddenly a lot of people start to "lose their faith", so discussions in religion class became rather heated debates. Some day I realized I was on the side of the non-believers, too... Most teachers are okay with it, my religion teacher was actually pretty glad that me and my friend were of the non-Catholic/atheist opinion because it added some spice to discussions.

So speak your mind when you feel you need to do it, maybe don't just shout it out at every occasion... a peaceful coexistence should be possible.

And are you sure that in that school people wear school uniforms? In my school we're allowed to wear anything we like (and actually, when I wear a schoolgirl-type short skirt people are somewhere in between amazed and shocked).

I think it's just an american thing. They like to think they are better people because they have money so they have a strict dress code.

That's a big compliment coming from you CK. And yes, the skirt (and knee-high socks) thing is certainly one to be happy about. I had previously gone to a non uniform school and (at the expense of sounding a tad girlish) I couldn't find anything to wear!

Well after all your coments I certainly feel a whole lot better about this. Thanks all

Ooh, I used to go to a Christian school, and I raised hell every other chance I got while still walking within the lines of their constipated "rules". So technically, they couldn't do a thing b/c I wasn't breaking any rules

Discrimination does exist between the "missionary kids" and the "other kids" ... and the MKs were treated better. Sons of bitches also fucked up my college recommendations on purpose b/c they wanted me to go to a rinky-dink christian college to learn ... oh, how to deliver quintuplets on a bamboo raft in the middle of the Amazon ... instead of going to a big10.

However, I agree that they have a better environment than public schools, and the principles they teach are pretty good (taken in moderation ). Just don't lose yourself and your mind in that sea of monotony/one-tracked mind-ness. Keep an open mind and don't fall into the genuflective rut.

Oh yea, and keep in touch w/ the hot catholic school girls. If they're all goody2shoes and reserved then, once they get out into the real world, there's a good chance that they're going to go berserk-ier!

Yeah I can confirm that from personal experience. That is what happened to me... Suddenly seeing the big wide world certainly gives you a freedom shock.

this is from a guy's perspective that's gone to catholic school for 7 years.

catholic school girls aren't all that high in morals. they're the same as girls in any other school.
some of them wait til the end to finally get out in the world, and to be honest, they suck and they don't know how to handle themselves when they get too deep.

Well it's nice to have someone with first hand experience comment on the situation and it's greately appreciated.

I guess partially the reason for me starting this post was because I had hoped someone from the actual school would turn out to be a detneter and could actually set me straight. But thus far it seems that hasn't happened, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Given the various movies and stuff I've seen on catholic schools the girls there do seem to be, as Nikita pointed out, goody2shoes but I hope to whatever god I once believed in that that isn't the case.

I went to a catholic school in my younger days and I can tell you that young catholic girls are the most immoral out there

Have fun my young friend !!

edit: It also helps if you are not catholic going to the school cause you get out of religion classes and a hell of a lot of other "mandatory" activities. One of the few times in my life when religion came in handy.

from my freinds who go to catholic schools i've found out they have the worst drugs problems crime problems (my nephew broke in there during the holidays and was caught running down the high street with his freinds with about half the IT department in his hands ) and that none of the pupils there are in any way religious. if you're worried about you education suffering cos of your lack of faith i wouldnt worry. if however you're worried about getting a good education dont go to a catholic school go to a nice normal comprehensive like the rest of us non ex convicts

ROFLMAO.

A very frightening image DKB, a friend of my dad's told him that he was in that school and he then went on to university to become a successful employee in the biochemistry industry, I hardly think Mississauga (where I live) is a breeding ground for the type of people you discribed in your post, or at least I hope not.

I went to a public school in Waukesha County Wisconsin, a very rich area and very conservative (2nd only to orange country California in registered Republicans as a \% of the population) well the last year I was there they installed 57 cameras around the school (Two campuses 2,300 kids)) and hired a full time police officer for our "protection" the best part of this high school was the fact that we could get truancy tickets for walking in the halls without pass's and we also had a closed campus. My school was a fascist institution. I am not bitter I was treaded well there and have no personal negative experiences when it comes to the administration, but I know a lot of people who were marked as being trouble makers freshman year and were never aloud to change their image and no one ever expected anything out of these kids. Most of the kids in question were in reality very smart and just couldn't stand the authoritarian administration. But the vast majority of the kids I went to high school with were pompous ass’s who could get away with a lot because there parents had influence, it’s not just some stupid thing you see on movies I can tell you from experience that it happens. What I guess I am trying to say is it's not always the school's administration (Private or public) that make's a school I know of some very bad catholic schools in my rich white suburban homeland.
