is that money in canadian or US?...but yeah i know what you mean...i went to the movies last night, 8 dollars (US) for a ticket, then 3.50 for a drink. i like it when my friends work there...order, give money, get all your money back as "change" to fool the camera....hee hee hee

I was lucky enough to find a theatre in Rochester in the Greece Ridge Center that only charges 7.00 for general admission and 4.75 for matinees. The seats are nice too, stadium seating with really high chair backs, i'm 6'4 and i can rest my head against the chair without slouching.

well around where i live theres basically two theatres...regal = high prices, but nice seating, easily accessible amc = very very good prices (i think its 3.75 matinee, 5 otherwise) but theres no staidum seating, so its not as nice....but its also farther away Posted by Firefox on Jul. 02 2000,17:44
I have a question- how much do you all pay for movie tickets at the theatres? The price at premium theatres where I live is ป standard admission, ů for matinees or tuesdays. The thing that makes this so crazy is that they are constantly building new theatres! Within the span of like 5 years, they will have built like 10 massive movie theatres in my city... and yet they keep claiming that they have no choice but to raise ticket prices. Gee, I wonder why you are all out of money- BECAUSE YOU BUILD A โ million dollar theatre every friggin' month! And I won't even get into concession prices... Okay, so I will. The cost for me to go to a movie tonight and buy a regular popcorn and large drink was about ฤ. That could have easily rented me 4-5 brand spankin' new releases on video. Don't get me wrong, these new theatres are awesome... I just question the quantity of them, as well as the rapidity of their building them. -FFox ------------------ Posted by Hellraiser on Jul. 02 2000,19:35
quote: Rochester NY? When I used to live there, the best theatre was the Tinseltown USA, only Ŭ.25 for Matinee and Ů.00 for evening shows. Great seating too. ------------------ Posted by Chrissy on Jul. 02 2000,23:17
I live in NYC its 9.50 on fridays and saturdays and about 8.50 on weekdays. Some of the theaters arent even nice. I go to school upstate though and I dont mind paying that much for a ticket cause at least the theaters are nicer. I think its getting ridiculous. The minute it cost me 10 bucks to see a movie is the day I stop going to see them. And you know what gets me even more. You pay 9 bucks and then the movie sucks! what then? its a no win situation. ------------------ Posted by jrh1406 on Jul. 03 2000,01:08
HellraiserYeah i think tinseltown is up to 8.00 for regular and 5 for matinee. Posted by Firefox on Jul. 03 2000,05:30
Yeah, that was ป CDN, but I think they are raising it to ผ. Now, there are cheapo theatres that have like Ū movies, but the theatres are crap and the movies are all at least a month or two old. The best solution is if you work at the theatres (Famous Players at least) you can watch all the free movies you want (well, like 1 per day) and bring a friend too if you want. My friend used to work there, so that was cool, but then he quit... -FFox Posted by Hellraiser on Jul. 03 2000,10:16
Ouch! That's a big jump for only 2 years.------------------ Posted by Teflon on Jul. 07 2000,19:05
At the movie theater I go to, they were selling snack machine sized sodas for ū.00!
Posted by rig_hater on Jul. 07 2000,22:15
we've got 3 of the big stadium style theatres in my city. thankfully, AMC reduced their pricing for students to Ű CAN for any show. then one of the famous players theatres nearby reduced its pricing too. on the other side of the city though, famous players still charges ป CAN. it's insane! (and then the film companies wonder why so many people pirate their products - if only they'd put 2 and 2 together and realize that it doesn't equal 5!!)------------------ Posted by Hadlock on Jul. 15 2000,17:26
Hey I live near dallas, and we're just now complaining about 5.50$ movie tickets, stadium seating, reeeeal nice theaters. Prices last summer ran Ŭ.50, 3.50 for students, and we also have a dollar theater (50 cents on tuesdays) w/in walking distance of my house (1/4 mile).... I went to europe and we paid 10$ to see Gladiator, but then again, the theater was a rebuilt Brodway theater with a screen easily 200' across (I shit you not)
Posted by Sithiee on Jul. 16 2000,05:49
yeah theres a theatre in DC near me called the uptown...i think its a really old thatre that theyve been keeping up to date, its got a balcony, only plays one show at a time, and the screen is so wide that it needs 3 separate projectors.

is ice cream the normal thing to get at the movies in uk?...here id assume its mostly popcorn and a soda...sometimes candy...what is it other places??
Posted by directhex on Jul. 17 2000,05:28
now for the view from the uk:they just built a new cinema near where i live. usual prices are (i think) £6.80 for a regular ticket. course, it's within walking distance of school so if u walk in in uniform, that goes down to £3.80. course, the ice cream costs far too much. --directhex ------------------ Posted by Hellraiser on Jul. 17 2000,12:04
I always bring my own food to the movies, it's better and costs less. You just have to conceal it, a sweater or jacket over your arm works well. Then sit back and enjoy the movie.------------------ Posted by Sithiee on Jul. 17 2000,13:13
did you see scary movie yet?
Posted by kuros- on Jul. 17 2000,23:03
Seeing as upto to 70\% of the ticket prices go directly to the distrubtor and not the cinema, u shouldn't be surprised by thecost of them. Cinemas make the vast proportion of their profit from concessional sellsThat includes all drinks, sweets, popcorn. Mine sells packets of Fruit Pastels for £1.90 about 110\% mark up Posted by aventari on Jul. 18 2000,07:03
hellraiser- haha me too, we always gotta remember to wear our baggiest pants and stuff too, otherwise a bag of mini-snickers is kinda obvious in regular clothesbut it's so much cheaper it hurts.. we never have gotten caught either. ------------------ Posted by Firefox on Jul. 18 2000,17:09
Yeah, but I like movie theatre popcorn and drinks. Even if they are outrageously expensive. -FFox ------------------ "A christian, an anarchist-slash-prostitute, figures out the true meaning of freedom. Not freedom like America, freedom like a shopping cart." Posted by Firefox on Jul. 19 2000,04:05
Soda... soda... soda... that should be my next rant. Not that there's really anything wrong with that, it just sounds so wrong to a Canadian's ears to hear pop or soft drinks referred to as "soda"... I'm nowhere near organized enough to be able to remember to bring my own snacks, drinks, etc. That would require <gasp> PLANNING ahead of time. I often don't even know which movie I am going to see until I get to the theatre, so that would be a huge effort for me. -FFox ------------------ "A christian, an anarchist-slash-prostitute, figures out the true meaning of freedom. soda is the best word for it though...here in the states...at least in the east this holds true, north people call it pop, south people call it coke, and in the middle we call it soda....soda is the best word
Posted by Sithiee on Jul. 22 2000,15:56
well i was speaking from my experiences...but i dunno....maybe someone should travel through the world finding out what people call it what and where, and then make a giant color coded map.
Posted by jrh1406 on Jul. 22 2000,17:01
We call it soda in new england, and in upstate new york it's either pop or soda.I grew up in RI and CT and never actually heard anyone call it pop until i was like 14 Posted by Bozeman on Jul. 22 2000,20:52
ŭ.25 matinee, Ű.00 normal at Star Southfield, A quarter more if you go to AMC 20, which sucks. I live in Novi, Michigan, and we say pop here. I don't care what to call it, but pop is only one syllable, while soda is two.

AUพ I think... If you buy a movie money booklet of 10, it will end up costing close to AUบ. If I get a friend to get it from the uni newsagent, its about AUŰ something. So, until they leave uni, they are going to be my source of movie money. There is no prohibition of taking food into the cinemas here. Unless its hot food. So we usual go to a grocery shop within the complex to grab some food & drink (cheaper that way too) for cinema consumption ------------------ Posted by Althornin on Aug. 07 2000,13:38
Ok, how bout child movie prices become adult prices when the kid is 12??But you cant see an adult movie then. WTF??? ------------------ Posted by Evolution on Aug. 11 2000,21:23
Whoah! just the other day I was pissed about how they raised ticket prices to about Ŭ US, and those are the most expensive tickets tou can get around here
Posted by jrh1406 on Aug. 11 2000,23:20

I visted my GF in TX a few days ago, and they have the most awesome AMC theatre (hehe, my GF's initals.. not that anyone cares..) 20 thaetres, 2 floors, electronic ticket purchasing with ur CC, and a bunch of DSL comuters right outside. I put Detonate.net up on everyone b4 I left. Anyway,it was ů flat, and the soda was actually reasonable, like ũ.25 for a nice size cup..------------------ Posted by jrh1406 on Aug. 14 2000,02:32
Portugal huh?, oh well guess i won't be going there any time soon. I'm all the way over in Greece, Greece NY that is

i don't go to the movies very often, but last time i did it was Ŭ.50 for an afternoon show. i'm not sure what it is for evening, because i haven't been to an evening movie in at least 2 years. i refuse to pay the rediculous prices for what i can already get on VCD. i mean really, if i wanna spend a nice evening with a guy, i invite him over, make some popcorn, and watch the vcd version.... unless it's some MAJOR big deal movie, and then i go see it durin the afternoon. also, my college often does "non first run movies" like, this weekend we had MI:2, for 2 bucks. so it takes longer till i see the movie, but at least i don't feel so cheated if the flick sucks. ------------------ Posted by morganisms on Sep. 12 2000,05:43
Just wanna say paying ů.50 US for a damn ticket to see a movie is lame as hell!
