"Yeah. I hate immigrants. I hate em all. They disgust me what with their smell and the fact that they ain't able even to talk right english. And also, they're really lazy, but they somehow manage to steal jobs from the rest of us hard-working people. Damned immigrants. And I know that many of yous agree with me but are afraid to admit it!"

Fuck that shit. What I hate is willful ignorance. Simple ignorance is fine with me. I mean, we're all ignorant in some area or another (see 'Tech jokes not funny' thread). But when you consciously make the decision to be ignorant, when you refuse to hear what the other side is saying, that's wrong. Ignorance is not bliss. Truth is, it increases the misery and suffering in the world (and I think most of us can agree that there's enough of that to go around already).

I wish that some people would stop being so myopic and that they'd quit looking at the world in terms of 'us and them'. You're not helping anybody by putting up walls and drawing your stupid lines. The ruling paradigm of life is 'diversity and variety'. If homogeneity and stasis is what you want, you'll have time enough for that when you're rotting in your coffin.

I don't get what some people have against immigrants, somewhere in your past, your family immigrated to where you are living now, and if you live in the united states, chances are really good that there's an illegal immigrant somewhere in your family tree.

i'm quite a bit american indian and they weren't immigrants. and since they weren't, the other sides of my family beat the shit out of them and put them on the trail of tears. but that's fuckin' old news. bashing immigrants is racism with a thin disquise. i'm not about to bash germans, canadians, hispanics, etc because i'm fairly sure there's one not too far up in my family tree. ignorance and intolerance are the price we have to pay to cling to such inconvenient things as morals: we can't just kill the stupid mofo's.

im sorta divided on this issue, i mean i feel that people should have the right to move to wherever the fuck they want, and not be bothered by anyone about it. i also feel that they should earn the right to be there. i live in an area with lots of hispanic immigrants, and im not gonna rant about them stealing our jobs (cause its not like ive tried to hard to get one) but the way i feel is, if you move somewhere, you have to adapt to the fucking situation. theres no reason that they should get to move, and have all the benefits of the society, without trying to adapt to the downsides. first and foremost, you should have to learn the language, it seems like at least like 10\% of my school cant speak english. and then there are the people who dont wear deodorant. its really not cool. i mean, if i moved to russia or germany or something, i would do my best to learn the language, and follow whatever local customs they had. why dont we deserve the same courtesy?

id like to point out again, i am not against immigration at all(after all, my best friend is an immigrant) but im against immigrants who dont try to adapt at all.

Actually i'm part native american too, but we too immigrated from asia, (although there is a theory that there were people here from before that). So even most of the native americans were immigrants too.

OK I have a comment on this topic of course. Im a soc major and just finished a class in immigration. I dont understand the need for assimilation theory. The united states prides itself on its diversity. Making it a meltingpot destroys that basic ideal. Immigrantion is what makes this country what is without it most of you wouldn't be here. Its pure ignorance to dislike immigrants because they dont conform to your standard of life. Why should they? Just because you think they should?

All I have to say is they need to learn to speak English or get the f**k out of the country. Ill even give them 3 years. After that, if you can't take a Drivers test or apply for a job in English you are gone!

On a related note. If I'm white and both my parents are white South Africans does this make me an African American?

i agree on the language part, even though america has no official language, we conduct all business in english, so i just as well should be set official.

The "Deceleration of independence" and the "Constitution" are written in what? The "Bill of Rights" is written in what?

I'm thinking English is the language of this country. Everyone is just trying to be PC to say it out loud. I'm tired of the PC thugs telling me how to think. If your an asshole I'm going to tell you (not directed at anyone) if your a moron I'm not going to call you mentally impaired, I'm going to call you a moron and tell you to get out of my gene pool. If your short I'm not going to call you "vertically challenged" I'm going to call you short. On my census form under race I checked other and put down human.

just 3 words
Get over it!

"Decl-A-ration"

Before you demand those around you be educated and speak English, you'd better be sure you can.

I sympathize with you Wolfguard, but you have to remember that common courtesy is what makes the world easier to live in.

Colorful euphemisms don't hide the truth, but pointing out the obvious isn't always right either.

I completely agree with wolfguard. do you know how dumb i feel when i cant understand half the people in my school? most of the time people have to say things 3 or 4 times to get me to understand. Is it so much to expect to be able to be understood at the mcdonalds? i have a better chance of getting my order right when i bring my friend to say it in spanish. and dont even bother witha special order...my friend whos a vegetarian asked for a big mac with no meat, and they couldnt understand the concept...i think that since they do get to come to our country (and yes, i consider it a priveledge, i would feel the same way if i went to theirs) they shouldnt make us live with their handicap...of course this is quickly becoming a "stupid people piss me off" rant....so, yeah

UUUUUUHHHHHH NOT AT ALL! THE USA PRIDES ITS SELF ON the good ol' melting pot theroy! If you have a diffrence you can't change its called cultural baggage and in the usa you're basicly fucked if you have got it, well if you are not a white english speaking male ages 18 - 40 your fucked in the usa! Canada is a country that truly prides itself on diversity and multiculturalism and just about all that stuff you talked about applies to Canada and not the united stares! A system of a cultural moasic, we take the best of everything and the rest dosn't matter cause it helps to build the whole picture of our nation and makes us stronger as a community, Canada depends on immigration to increase the population as the average female only has 1.6 children so diversity is taught as a vertue and dont tell me it is in the united states because i live in a border town and belive me things are not at all the same in the usa when it comes to diversity! Here all are acepted no matter what!

You may give me the old well look at new your all thoese cultures living in 1 place speech, well come to Toronto that is a real cultural moasic. For the people who are talking about feeling dumb about not understanding people, how do you think they feel! It is not them who should be forced to adhere to our rules and customs it is us who should llook at their's and see what is good other places in the world!
Also it isn't racism to dicriminate someone if they are from a certian nation, although u may find this hard tobelive American is not a race..nor is canadian, dutch, or english

First of all I am fully cognizant that American isn't a race or even an ethnicity for that matter. And I agree with you on many points. However, America's beginnings go back to the issue of diversity. It is true that over the past century we have deviated from the original goal of promoting diversity amongst people. It just saddens me to think that people would rather have their culture and heritage obliterated rather than emphasized. Over all I believe Canada to be a better system- in fact I may move there one day. We'll see.
I also didn't mean to upset you. The comment wasn't about immigrants in the sense that it meant to mock the current system or even to say that America is better. In fact I would say of the other countries around the world America's system is the most biased. The comment was made generally about diversity among people in the United States and why racism/ethnocentrism shouldn't be tolerated.

"I did the courtesy thing most of my life and got no place. Now im a complete asshole and most people leave me alone. Life is much more fun this way.

Courtesy makes the world easier for others to live in. people like me just make it more fun"

Well that and they also f*ck it up for the rest of us. You know why you feel that way? Probably because people with the same attitude did it to you somewhere down the line. This is a never ending chain of disrespect and disregard for each other- one of these days, someone has to be able to stand up and say "You know what? I got royally screwed over, and even though I want to just give up and screw the next joe who comes along, I'm going to try to be nice anyway, so that someday, when they have influence on someone else, that person won't become a jaded, bitter, mean spirited individual."

Of course, this requires people, for 13/100ths of a second, to think about something besides themselves. For a lot of people, the idea of EVER making a personal sacrifice for the betterment of others is absurd.

And people wonder why there is so much pain and suffering in the world today? I always think to myself "How could they wonder?"

Back to the topic of Immigration- As a Canadian, I see the various perspectives of it all. I feel for immigrants, and I think that many Americans (and Canadians alike) don't appreciate that many of these so-called "no good dirty bums" have had lives so difficult that our shiny-G7 pampered asses would never even be able to compare. Yes, we are all priveledged. Even Bob Smith, the typical minimum wage bus driver in New York, is a well-to do in the global scale of things. Canada and the US is like the Beverly Hills of the world.

Wow, now I'm getting WAY off topic. I think that the fact that I have a Calculus final exam tomorrow, and I should have got to bed three hours ago is lingering, and I can't concentrate. I think I'll just end this excrutiatingly long post here and hit the hay. Excuse me for any incoherence.

Ok, so being an asshole is fun for me. 90\% of the human race is my plaything anyway because they are so fucking stupid. Its great when just a few words can make a person waste 2 trips to a bbs when he realy does not have the time. This i find funny.

As for the language thing, if you were to move to any other country you would have to learn the language or you would never be able to get anything done. Just try to get a german drivers licence when you dont speak german. Try to get a french work visa without speaking french. Try to get anything in GB without speaking english(this is second hand but the guy that lived there told me it is so).

Funny thing is they have no problem taking our money, as long as they can ask for it in their own language.

as a good AP American history student, i feel its my duty to point out that america was not founded on the issue of diversity at all, but rather on the fact that we were tired of being britain's bitch. it was about fair control over our own destiny, and although itd be nice to think it was about diversity, it really had jack to do with it.
please dont argue with me about this, i know my american history.

america started on the aforementioned principles, but also on jefferson's idea that when you're getting fucked it's not only your right, but your DUTY to rebel. not fighting back doesn't make you a coward in the eyes of men, it makes you a coward in the eyes of god.

this has nothing to do with anything besides history. i'm happy to waste your time, though.

Posted by Sithiee on Jun. 14 2000,18:25
and that has exactly what to do with america being based on the idea of diversity?...can we say jack shit?
Posted by Bozeman on Jun. 23 2000,14:28
Hey, ever heard of "give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free"? Our country was FOUNDED on the idea that immigrants add to society, not detract from it. (the melting pot) Also, would you like to be forced to learn and speak a language you don't want to learn or speak, Wolfguard?
Posted by XaSERaX on Jun. 23 2000,15:58
the only ones who can say they hate immigrants are the native americans

first of bozeman, exactly whos quote was that? and stop saying this shit about what our country was founded on. i already stated above, that it was founded on the idea of equal representation for all. it was not founded on anything else. the founding fathers didnt give a shit about immigration or any of that shit, they were pissed off that england didnt give them a chance to speak on their behalf in parliament. stop fucking saying this shit about america being based on immigration.

and if you dont wanna learn it, then you shouldnt move to the country. if you want to move, then you should be willing to make some sacrifices, otherwise you should stay put.

Sithiee...you are american arent you?
The quote is actually a poem by Emma Lazarus and its on the statue of liberty (ever been to NY-if you go take the Staten Island Ferry and you'll see her)

Of course you could have been kidding and God I hope you were. If not- I think you may need to do some paying attention in History class....

And let me apologise now for insulting you if I did so.

Posted by Sithiee on Jun. 24 2000,01:24
history class and math class are the only classes i do pay attention in.

allow me to express in detail.

when we first settled here, there were 3 types of colonies, each with a different type of government, some were royalty friendly, some parliament friendly, and some neither. anyway, back in merry ol' england, parliament is having meetings, and naturally, because theyre over in america, the colonies cant participate! well this seems unfair, right? so they complain. england says they have virtual representation, so its like they are virtually there and things are being said in their interest. that should be enough, right? wrong. anyway, skip forward to circa 1770's after england's mercantalist system is shitting out our economy, after the navigation acts of 1660 and 1663 etc. we basically sent england the demand for equal representation, and that we were pissed off they were doing stuff without hearing our side. of course they said no and then you have the declaration of independence, revolutionary war, articles of confederation, constitution, etc.

my point is, that it was not in anyway about immigration, but instead about equal representation. why do you think our gov't has so damn many checks that make sure everyone is represented??

note: i apologize for the incoherentness of this rant, but its all true, go look in a history book, youll find most of this.
