I dunno if there's been a rant about IRC, but I've never seen one... but anyway...

I'm an UnderNet IRC'er, and if you don't know, UnderNet's been hell lately. Some kid in Romania or something has been packeting UnderNet servers for around a month now, and he's gotten a few other people to join in his DDoS... It's so bad, the ISP that runs W and X (UnderNet's 2 channel bots) have had to shutdown. These packetting attacks aren't just a problem for UnderNet, but all the services these ISP's run... It's so bad, I've had to spend well over half an hour at some times just to get onto a server, to find it's lagged by atleast 3 minutes... right now, as I type this, I still haven't gotten ping replies I sent almost half an hour ago... Now, UnderNet's been pretty unstable for a long time, but 30 minute lag... That's sad.

I've also been reading EFNet and a few other networks are getting pretty bad with stablity and whatnot...

yeah, that's the good majority of it... damn, I hate packet kiddies...

If he's got a number of zombie machines, and can get more, that's much easier said than done.

just like hyperponic said, it's cuz he's got a whole bunch of machines. Plus it's not just him, after he started a bunch of "l33t h4x0r" groups started up, too. And it's also like Sithiee said, stupidity... The people that run UnderNet... gezz, complete idiots.

From what I read on /. the guy got access to a fucking ISP's server, think of how many packets you can send on their bandwidth. Not to mention the Undernet admins can't block the isp's addy as it'd kill a huge amount of customers. Pretty sad really. This is when you wish you could remotely fluctuate someone's refresh rate at a mad speed and blow their monitor into their face.

For the ISP to block the packets wouldn't do anything. Once the packet is routed down the ISPs circuit, it's already using up bandwidth. The trick is to get the packets blocked higher up and as close to the source as possible. This is much more difficult.

You can do a deny all ICMP packets, and other network traffic. He would actually have to log on to IRC to cause trouble then. We implement filtering like that on our routers. ICMP comes in but the get /dev/nulled in a manner of speaking. It can still bring down network if all that is going in is ICMP request, but it is a start.

NOTE: for those of you who don't know ICMP is ping.

I tried to take down efnet with DOS Ping on a 28.8 modem... somehow it didn't seem to take. I'm no l33t H4X0r.

efnext the newest irc group is online, it's the child of EFnet and should prove to be more stable. EFnet has been pretty bad lately too, no where near as bad as undernet but when only two servers let you in and there both down or in split mode it can suck.
