my physics teacher is a straight up moron. the entire class hates him, because he cant teach. he makes bad attempts to use the socratic method, which is a good method, but eventually you are gonna have to give some straight answers.

anyway, today he yelled at us because no one knew how to do the lab, and how we were supposed to do all the calculations outside of class (which i think we would if we knew how). then he started yelling about how in a college level course (its AP physics) the labs are done without a real teacher, just someone to make sure you dont blow yourselves up and a written procedure. instantly, 5 people all thought the same thing (thats half the class almost) "wouldnt it be nice if we had a procedure" you would think that he gives us one, but no, basically, he blabbers on in his socratic method about a topic for about an hour and 15 minutes (block scheduling), then he takes out half of a lab setup, asks some more questions and assumes everyone understands because one person says "yeah". then the next day when we do the lab, we spend a lot of time figuring out the procedure (about 1 hour for the lab in question), and then we have very little left to do the lab, and the next day, when no one knows what the results were supposed to be, he goes off on us because we werent able to read his mind. anyway, basically, im pissed off about this (i could write like 10 rants about the shit he does wrong, and still have more) and im sure this is incoherent, but anyway, yeah, enjoy...

The Socratic method got Socrates killed.

In the words of Socrates...

"I drank what?"

Thank you Val

did it really? hmm..i could write that up on his board when he leaves the room...see if it sends a message...no, better not, we have a sub zero tolerance policy...

Sounds kind of like my high school physics teacher. Whenever we asked her any question she would respond with “uhhhh...well...let me go get my answer book”

One time a friend of mine (perfect example of “totally fried stoner”) stole a 3 ft. long glass condenser with the intention of turning it into a super-bong. It was kind of amusing to see him stuff it down his pants/up his shirt and walk out of class with it. About a month later she finally managed to track down who did it and made him return it and apologize in front of the class

sounds a lot like my cisco teacher. she constantly bitches us out. and for nothing. she doesn't teach us a thing and expects us to know exactly what she's talking about. I just don't understand how these people are allowed to teach.

thats bullshit. I've taken a chemisty lab, and a physics lab, and in both the TA was more than willing to explain what was going on and help us with the calculations. In the physics one the the Prof even showed up regularly to help. Asking incredibly stupid questions that were explained in the lab manuals would have a negative affect on your grade, but legitamate questions were always answered.

i dont doubt that at all, im just complaining that he says this is a college course (i assume like what he experienced) and that they get procedures, and yet we dont. godammit i want one.

Unfortunately, a lot of high schools don't have such a system in place. If he's been with the school for a long time, you'll have a hell of a time getting anything done. I see that Sithiee is in Virginia. Not too far from my high school in Maryland. If VA is anything like MD in the way they run their school system, you would have to go through too much bullshit and red tape to get anything accomplished. Not trying to keep you down, just letting you know how it could go. At least in college we do have teacher evalutations.

well basically, hes been teaching....err..."teaching" there for like 12 years, and no one in my class likes the way he teaches at all, the only person in the class who consistently gets As is one of the biggest complainers. the problem with that is, is the teacher takes extra time to make sure his stuff is graded fairly. out of about 10 people who turned in a particular prelab, him and one other person got credit for it, and the rest of us were supposed to find it again and turn it again (i lost mine (just like the teacher must have) and so i didnt get the points, but again, thats a separate rant). yes, we have teacher evaluations, but basically the school system gives them like a weeks warning when theres going to be an evaluator (enough so that we usually know when theres going to be an evaluator) and usually, the teacher will change their style accordingly (my english teacher last year started actually teaching when the evaluator came, instead of just insulting students and making crude comments, again, shes another rant). so basically, yeah, we have enough shit on him to get him fired, but only like 2 people in my class would put forth the effort to do it, and that includes me. so basically, im fucked.

Bring a tape recorder to class and record what goes on. When you have enough evidence, bring it to the attention of the administration. The advantage of this is that it's not biased - it would be easy for the teacher to accuse a student of making up a complaint, but it would be hard for him to argue that the tape recorded outbursts never happened.

Does your school do teacher evaluations? If so, you should get as many of your fellow class mates to write legitimate, constructive critisisims(sp?) about him. I know that most teachers won't pay any attention to a review if all it does is personaly attach him, and not his teaching style. If your school doesn't to teacher evaluations, see if enough people in your class feel the same way as you do. If enough do, approach the department head, or if your teacher is the department head, the administration. If louge a formal complaint, making it sound very mature and perfessional, they will have to pay attention to it. And if none of that works, just tell younger students to avoid his class. If no one enrolls in it, he doesn't get to teach it. Hope things work out for you.

Usually you have to ask to tape a high school teacher's class. I'm guessing that your teacher will see the tap recorder and ask that it be turned off and/or removed from the room. And even if you do get a recording, the administration may not accept it since it was done without the teacher's knowledge. Basicly, with how the public education system is run in the US, once a teacher gets Tenure, which this teacher probably does, the only way to get rid of them is to have them arrested or have then quit. Try to get them to hit a student infront of the class. Then you can bring assult charges on them. They usually quit before they let the police get involved. It's a nasty, dirty thing to do, but it might be the only option that will actually work.

he doesnt really have outbursts, he just sorta talks down to everyone, and says those stupid things.

Ok, I'm not totally sure about this one, but I know it works in my state (North Carolina). If the teacher "talks down" to students, and you can prove that it hurts the kid's self esteem in anyway, they'll atleast put a monitor in the class room to watch the teacher, if not take the teacher's license. It worked 5 times here in the past 3 years, and that's in my county alone. I don't know if all states have this law, but test it or see if your's does.

Or, if you live in Rhode Island (my old state) you can get the mafia up there to help you. they love helping kids, as long as when you're 23 (I think that was the age) you join their henchman crew...

WHen you go to college it's even worse. You then have to pay 300 - 900 dollars for the class, only to have the deen tell you that the curiculum was designed to wead out the week.

You know, if you think about it, grammar school and highschool education is really a bunch of bullshit. How can you possibly measure a persons efficiency if there is that possibility that they might not be interested in the subject you are teaching them, whereas in college you are able to choose your subjects and jobs get a better idea of how you will fit into their company. I might not be in my right mind right now because i have given much better explanations to why I think grammar school and highschool are crap but just haven't had the incentive to speak up against shit I can't change, and which never will change anyway.
