Forum: Rants Topic: WTF is up with Canadian drivers? started by: askheaves Posted by askheaves on Nov. 22 2000,16:44
OK, so I'm driving to work yesterday, and I get stuck behind a car driving 25mph in a 45mph zone, with no way to pass... Ontario plates. Later in the day, stuck behind another Canadian car (B.C. plates), and once more that day as well. Today, I got stuck behind an Ontario car doing like 20 in a 45.First of all, this is the most Canadians I've ever seen in my life. I lived in Minnesota and in Wisconsin, and I don't think I've ever seen a Canadian license plate before. Now that I'm in the farthest part in America away from Canada, they're everywhere... and driving very slowly. So, first, wtf are they doing in southern Arizona? Secondly, are they driving 45kph and haven't made the connection yet? Posted by j0eSmith on Nov. 22 2000,21:39
If they drove all the way to southern Arizona, they're old. Old people drive slow. Trust me, not all canadians are that bad of drivers, just the old slow, lost ones. ------------------ Posted by Rhydant on Nov. 24 2000,16:05

worse: i was driving to toronto to see some relatives and we had to take around 30 miles of detour because of a 63 car pileup.that was just fucking crazy Posted by Sithiee on Nov. 26 2000,22:42
63 car pileup??? how the hell does that happen? i mean, i can understand up to like 15 maybe, but after that you should have seen it and been able to stop...

Sithee, zero visability caused by fog or blizzard etc.. combined with really bad road conditions...------------------ Posted by darksol on Nov. 27 2000,04:01
lesson for today: think before post------------------ Posted by Sithiee on Nov. 27 2000,08:30
dude, first off, when you have low visibility, you should be going slow. your speed is based on your visibility, thusly, zero visibility means zero speed. that is one of the few things that they actually taught me in driving school (they had a teaching problem, i had to teach myself how to park, how to merge, etc....i think ive done decent for self teaching...) and besides that, when one car hits another car, it makes a pretty loud noise, so you should hear it and realize somethins up. i still dont think its reasonable for a 63 car pileup...or are canadian driving standards lower than american's?

There was a nasty ass accident in Milwaukee last winter that was similiar. 94 southbound, the accident started, and cars just kept moving into it for a while... then, cars started slowing down, and cars behind them started adding to the mess. Some semis were involved, it involved around 40-some cars, I believe... closed off the highway for the rest of the night.Along that note, here's another phenomenon here in Arizona. There is one real practical route I know to get between Phoenix and Tucson, that being I-10... 2 lanes each direction, 75mph speed limit. Since airline rates are 10x (literally) cheaper from Phoenix than Tucson, I make that trip pretty often. Everytime I make that trip, I see an accident that backs up the highway for around 10 miles... sometimes in my direction, sometimes the other. No point, really, just really frustrating that the cops can't clean the accident out very quickly, and I lose 2 hours sitting still. Posted by aventari on Nov. 27 2000,21:02
I'm not suprised at all about a 63 car pile up. Some people are horrible drivers. and 1 bad driver can fuck it up for a lot of other descent ones. If you've ever been driving here in San Diego when it rains you'll see the meaning of no fucking clue how to drive in adverse conditions. on a related tiff, those drivers education courses are the biggest load of shit i've seen. They barely teach anything useful at all. The government should mandate racing schools like Bob Bondurant and some real track time before you're allowed to get behind the wheel. Then you'd learn how to actually control a car the correct way, and how to avoid accidents. I must admit, i was a pretty shitty driver before i'd done a few 360's in a controlled environment and felt first hand what was going on. ------------------ Posted by Sithiee on Nov. 27 2000,23:09
yes, bad drivers, thats why its unacceptable. and if i could afford to, i would take every driving course there is, so i wouldnt have to teach myself how to drive.

When i first put the supercharger on my car it had WAYYY more power than i expected. On more than one occasion i ended up spinning out or completely backwards on a highway, but i never caused an accident and i never was around anyone else(was mostly at like 2 am on a deserted road). People tell me I am a danger to the public with my car, but on what basis do they have. During the day on my way to work i dont shit around. I drive normal, just like most everyone else on the road. There is the occasional rice burner that feels the need to race everyone from stoplight to stop light and weave through traffic (This is a generalization and a stereotype but i am not being hypocritical because in the last 5 years since i have been employed and a driver in this area those are the only people that "I" see doing it) but no one ever says to them(in my presence, or do i hear them complaining about people telling them) that they are a danger. Now i will give you the fact that I am a reletivly new driver with a high performance car but i put people in no more danger than the 16 year old in the Ford focus or the 3 cylinder 65 hp Geo metro. To put this into perspective one of the guys i know bought a brand new Integra back in like 97. He had it for a week then put an exhaust kit on it and thought it was a Formula 1 car. I dont think he had the car 2 monthes before he rammed it up under the ass end of a elementary school bus at about 75 mph. He didnt die or hurt anyone, but for christs sake he hit a fucking school bus with little kids on it. He didnt even get a ticket. I want to know where the double standard lies here. i think theres an art to breaking the driving law. i.e. you speed(not counting like 5 mph over) when you know there arent any speed traps around. and some things you shouldnt do. at least slow down for the stop sign if your not gonna stop. i hear about all these people who just dont know how to drive, and then they add to it by breaking the law at the same time. but i know what you mean about feeling the need to beat everyone off the line at a stoplight...at night, i do that...i dont know why, but i always have this paranoia type feeling where i think everyone wants to race me, even when no one is there....im trying to stop it, but its kinda hard...

I remember that 63 car pileup pretty well. To clear up any speculation, it was caused by a combination of "Industrial Fog" and wreckless driving. Some idiot was driving to fast and slammed into another guy, starting a nice Chain reaction. If anyone remembers anything else, perhaps you could clear it up for me. So yeah. Not ALL canadian drivers are bad. Just the elderly, teens like me, and residents of Ottawa and Montreal! ------------------ |
