i was at software etc today and i got really pissed off. in general they overprice shit and rip you off with selling used games, but thats nothing new. here's what i saw: chrono trigger, 10+ years old, just the cartridge, used, selling for ๟.99!!! (yeah i realize its the most popular rpg of all time but ๠ is 2x the original price!!) plus they are selling the original playstation and the new ps1 which is 1/3 size for the same price! are they stupid?! or just assholes? one final thing they have a big poster infront of every store "playstation 2 跋.99!! get yours today!" on they are backordered till spring 2001! how can they advertise a proguct they dont have.... software etc=fagorts!!!1

All of these things are bothersome, yes. Firstly, the 10+ years is incorrect... I think it actually came out around 95 or so. I bought my copy for 25 bucks under 2 years ago (and I have no SNES anymore ). The PS2 thing makes me laugh too.

Software Etc. is not in the business of appealing to the hardcore gamer anymore. Much in the way that Radio Shack has changed it's focus from an electronic hobby store to a ghetto-crowd cell phone store, SE is moving toward the ghetto-crowd play station store. Any suckers willing to spend ๠ on Chrono Trigger is crazy, unless it is considered a collectors item. It took a bit of work to find my copy, so I'm not sure.

I have fallen in love with Electronics Boutique. I got my PS2 there, and last Sunday, I actually was able to trade mine back for a new one since I got a defective DVD playback. THEY HAD AN EXTRA ONE SITTING IN THE BACK!!!!! They seem to be reasonably priced, and they have a lot of bargin bin games (which I flourish on).

My dad doesn't like them because they won't accept checks anymore. However, yes, they do overprice stuff... but Chrono Trigger is of course out of print. No doubt it is in the top ten SNES games. I wouldn't say that's worth it though.

P.S. The most valuable SNES game is Ogre Battle I believe

I stopped going to those overpriced corporate mall stores a while ago. My friend (Mahdi) turned me on to this small local store 'Software and Such'. They buy and sell used software, and have all the new stuff too. It's ran by a dude that loves computer games. He'll come out and talk to you about the newest games, whats good and not, plus they have a few windows boxes in the back with the newest games, you can sit down and test out.
Great prices too. I dont want to sound like an advertisement, but this is the coolest most laid back computer store i've been to.
have a good day!

rent pc games? no way.

maybe that's a Canadian thing...cause I'd have every single one if it worked that way around my town!

shit, forget the 80min cd, just get the noCD crack. just did that for SOF myself...

Posted by askheaves on Nov. 16 2000,01:08
Wow. Renting computer games... that's one hell of a hustle. You don't need a distributer, and you probably make a better profit off it after a couple dozen people 'rent' your one copy. I'm not sure, but I think this could potentially be illegal.

i think software etc and EB are owned buy the same company.
Posted by Cyrino on Nov. 16 2000,05:28
There's a Microplay in town and you might think that the owner might know someting about games. For instance, I go in there, ask if they've got a copy of Homeword in and he's like "Homeworld? what's that?" So, I say "remember, the game of the year last year?" and he says "I've never head of it, is it any good?" WTF?

So, I just said fuck it, and rented a copy of Soldier of Fortune and bought one of the "80 minute" cds that they have there, which in fact was a 74 min...

Fuck, I hate stupid people...

One time i was in an EB and there was a mad rush for dreamcasts. The dude behind the counter was a huge asshole. Everyone was asking for the console and he wouldnt go get them out of the back. He said that after everyone that wanted one had paid hed go get a bunch. Then this kid came in to return a madcat steering wheel and the clerk stood there for like 15 minutes arguing with the dude over why he couldnt take it back, all while like 20 people were waiting for their dreamcasts. Then this dude that was the first one there came up to the counter and got all mad at the clerk and whipped out a pocket knife and was like if you dont give me my dreamcast im gonna do something drastic. So the clerk dude goes into the back and is back there for like 10 minutes. The angry dude goes back there and finds the clerk sitting on his ass, just making everyone wait. So he starts kicking the clerks ass and throws him out in to the store and the rest of the crowd stood there and watched him get his ass kicked. Then someone set him on fire and the crowd riped his flaming body apart and put his parts in the 4 corners of the mall where they still burn today and im drunk.

A lot of software is just generally a rip off.

I mean, i consider £40 not too much for a quality game, but then there's stuff like MS word. £250 for a word processor? WTF? just go to sun.com and download staroffice for free.

Then there's the fact that while each individual application from office costs about £250, the entire suite goes for about £320.

Then they sell it to students for £100.

Really shows you about what sort of margins there are.

and around £400 for photoshop is flat out unjustified.

Posted by Sithiee on Nov. 17 2000,08:31
not for photoshop. photoshop is a really really really good program and the people who worked on it deserve their money. word is a pretty good program and when they did that overhaul in like what was it? 95 version? then it would have been worth it, but since then just seem to be tweaking and adding in little annoying things, and for that effort, we should be paying like 30 bucks maybe...
Posted by askheaves on Nov. 17 2000,23:13
I've always been of the belief that anything that you aren't making money off of or gaining enjoyment from shouldn't be paid for. For example, Windows. I haven't paid for a version of Windows since Win95 OEM with my computer. I haven't paid for office. I haven't paid for photoshop. I steal some games, but not so much anymore.

Businesses make money and are more productive when they have some software products. In an office, everybody should have a licensed copy of Win2K. They should pay for Office. They should pay for photoshop if they're in the business of graphic art or whatever.

My use of photoshop at home is on the order of opening it once or twice a year, and I don't even have a copy now. My use of office... minimal now that I'm out of school. However, at work, since there is a direct return on investment, these prices become justified.

If you want to bitch about pricing, check out some of Rational's products (Rose, ClearQuest, ClearCase, etc.) We're paying about 10 Gs for one license to use their software. Why? Because it will save us well over the amount we pay in the long run, and we'll get a much better product by following their process. People should pay what they think the software is worth. In my case, the Office at home, not worth 跌. At work? Worth over 跌.

I actuall dont like software etc. or eb. They overprice many of their titles and hype just way too much. Although their employees know about the games. I prefer going to fry's to buy most of my computer hardware/software (and i use the word software lightly, i usually dont BUY software)
