CK "What?? You guys are the paramedics.. aren't cops the ones who are in charge of watching the roads?"
MEDIC "Well, blah blah blah (reason that we dont know)"
CK "... How much?"
MEDIC "๮, I believe... do you have any insurance papers on you at the moment?"
CK "?? no...."
MEDIC "跚 in total."
CK " ... .... "
MEDIC "Welcome to Pittsburgh :P"

I didn't think paramedics could even write tickets. Talk about your bad luck.

I've been in court more for traffic BS more than I care to say, but every single time I see someone go up to the judge on a no proof of insurance charge, they show the judge that they actually DID have insurance at the time (just show the insurance card you get), and that they just didn't have their card when the cop busted 'em, the judge reduces the fine to 10 bucks.

This is in Cali, but i'm sure in PA the judge will be lenient IF you had insurance at the time, and you aren't wanted for regicide or something

good luck, and always fight the system!

solid-hehe thats pretty much what i was thinking. in pretty sure it was a paddy wagon though

ahh fuck! 跌!!

If those [insert insult according to your taste here] people wanna fine you... well they should at least look at if it was your fault! You could not have that insurance informatin on you, as it was IN THE MAIL! And every person with more than a braincell should understand you cannot have anything on you that you do not have yet. I think judges are supposed to have more than one braincell, so a judge should understand you if you explain it slowly and clearly.

Fight for your right, you do NOT have to pay those 220 bucks!

I almost missed the part about the paddywagon. For a sec I thought you were serious about the ambulance.

Swindle of the year, I would have to say...

Save your breath. "It was in the mail" is not a valid excuse.

At least not in CA.

Okay, your laws are probably different from the laws in this country. But if "It was in the mail" is not a valid excuse... well, what would be a valid excuse then?

on closer inspection of the ticket, it's acually a ษ fine plus 10+30+27.50+1.50 in expenses, totaling ๮. I guess he didn't put the 赼 on there, which is a relief. Anyway, since I'm back in MD and not about to drive to Pittsburg again to argue about the ticket (spending almost as much in gas as i would save), how do I plead not guilty by mail? Or can I go to a MD court house?
Posted by Spydir on May 04 2001,00:18
you have to be in the Pittsburg court, that's where the ticket was given (blame congress).

I know in a couple states if you can get a lawyer to sign the statement, and your provide a damned good reason for whatever you did, they'll accept it (one of the few good things about NC...), but I don't know about PA.

It's Pittsburgh dammit! You had it right in the topic name. If I'm not mistaken, it's the only one in the US with the h on the end. Elsewhere in the country, the similarly-named Pittsburg cities have no h on the end. Something to do with looking too German during the World Wars or something.

You have to carry your insurance info with you in your car?

We don't have to. Hell, we don't even have to carry our drivers licence (I do though). We just have to produce it within 3 days if asked. That involves going to the cop shop, so its easier to carry it.

wow that doesn't sound right masher...in the US you are supposed to have your license, car registration, and an insurance card with you at all times. it doesn't sound right that you don't even have to carry your license when driving down there.
Posted by j0eSmith on May 04 2001,03:52
What masher said actully sounds similar to here. You are required by law to carry your lisence and registration (that includes insurrance) with you at all times when driving. However, should you be pulled over and not have any of those with you, you have 3 days to produce the proper documents (lisence or insurence or whatever) to void the fine for driving without them.

CK, your traffic laws must really differ from ours. For us, you plead guilty if you don't plead not-guilty within one month of getting the ticket. Then you don't even have to pay the damn thing until you go to renew your insurance.

If you get pulled over by the cops for speeding or making illegal left turns, and they ask for your licence and you say 'I haven't got it', they still fine you, and you have to go to the police station and produce your licence to show that you do have a licence.

That is just too much stuffing around, so I always carry mine. But the insurance thing... When we pay to register our cars, the fee includes third party insurance, so anybody you hit is covered by that. Any cars you hit aren't. So don't hit anything expensive if you don't have insurance.

Thats weird, here in South Africa, you can get fined for not carrying your license with you, and your car's registration must be displayed on your windscreen at all times, but I've never heard of having to carry insurance details around. And I've gotten to know some of these details pretty intimately over the past few days cos my car decided to skid across the road in the rain and hit into a BMW. Which wouldn't be so bad if the BMW got off worse than only a broken brakelight and a dented bumper, while I'm stuck with R16,000 damage to my Ford.

I'm not anywhere near PA/MD, but this link should help: < http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/mc/html/traffic_court.html >

Call the Pittsburgh traffic court up and ask them what you're supposed to do. The number is (412) 255-2700. They're open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Just out of random curiosity, would you be so kind as to describe this illegal left turn for us (me)?

i was wondering if i could plead not guilty by mail without being summoned, because if i am guilty then my insurance will go up like mad.
Posted by Blain on May 05 2001,04:43
Oh, you did say that...stupid short term memory, can’t even work right after a few beers.

Whenever I've been pulled over the officer has told me that the only way to dispute the thicket was to appear at the designated courthouse at the appointed time, so I guess I’m no help.

masher, im pretty sure you have to keep your license on you at all times whilst driving

First off CK- does PA have reciprocal reporting laws- ie they let your insurance company know you got a ticket in the state--- cause if they dont you are better just paying for the ticket and living the rest of your life. If not I am pretty sure that where ever the ticket was issued is where you have to plead- so if you are pleading not guilty you need to send in the ticket with that info on it and they will send you a court date to contest--- regular procedure for ticket from the rest of the way there- if you want to see if you can plead not guilty in your state to get out of the ticket from PA I would suggest calling the DAs office (or whom ever does traffic in your state\county) and talk to them....thats what I would do...

ROTFLMFAO solid. I like that one.

.

Neophyre:

quote:
ROAD TRANSPORT (GENERAL) ACT 1999 - SECT 19

19 Authorised officer may require production of driver licence and name and address from driver or rider (cf Traffic Act, s 5 (1) and (1A))

(1) An authorised officer may, in the execution of his or her functions under
the road transport legislation, require the driver or rider of a vehicle or
horse to do any or all of the following:

(a) produce his or her driver licence (in the case of the driver of a motor vehicle),

(b) state his or her name,

(c) state his or her home address.

<SNIP>

When you can't produce it, they charge you with driving without a licence.

quote:

ROAD TRANSPORT (GENERAL) ACT 1999 - SECT 22

22 Production of driver licence to court (cf Traffic Act, s 9)

(1) A person who is the holder of a driver licence and who is charged with a
breach of the road transport legislation must produce his or her driver
licence to the court at the hearing of the charge.
<SNIP>

You then bring your licence into court, and get the charege dismissed. That is, if you have a licence to drive what you were driving at the time.

Thats my read of it anyway. Still, I wouldn't want to test it...
